Question Format new card?

I just purchased a 1G SD card for my Axim 5. I can't find anywhere as to whether this card has to be formated, & if so, how?

Also, how do I check to see what is on current "old" card?

Thanks, all.

Carol

It most likely comes formatted and ready to go if you bought it new.

If you need to format it your best bet is to do it from your pc via a card reader.

How would one know if it needs to be formated?

I suggest do not format in card reader. You can format in your pocket pc using sktools or resco explorer if you have them installed. If not, just don't do anything.
I did some test with formating storage cards.
Card formated in PPC has much better write speed. Read speed is the same.
See thread sk-tools in storage card forum.

Check out the Flash Memory and Formatting tutorial. It is listed under Resources/Hardware Tutorials. Also, there is a host of information in the Storage Card Forum.

I had the best performance using Pocket Mechanic. They offer a trial version that will work for 15 or 30 days, I forget which. If you like it, the program is cheap. Resco works well too.

I probably doesn't need to be formatted, but will likely perform better if you do format it in the PPC using Resco or Pocket Mechanic. Use the Flash Memory and Formatting tutorial above as a guide.

If you put it in your Axim and you can read and write files, you don't need to format it. In fact, if memory serves correctly, if you insert a card with a file format that it doesn't recognize, your Axim should ask if you want to format it. Unfortunately you can't manually choose to format it in your device unless you have a 3rd party application like the ones Galina mentioned.

Thanks everyone for your great help! I have only used my Axim for PocketStars, & really haven't gotten into how it works & what it's capabilities are.

Your help & links are much appreciated!
