pcmcia to cf coverter - will it run a modem ????????
As we all know, compact flash modem cards that have automatic connection speed fallback are expensive. Has anyone tried using a pcmcia modem ,which can be had very cheaply (got mine for $2.75) with a pcmcia to cf converter? These are also very reasonable.

Might be a super cheap solution to the expensive modem problem!

You mean a cf to PCMCIA converter right? They will for ethernet (I have tested). PCMCIA to CF is the wrong direction....

Only problem is finding drivers for the card. Maybe a little experimentation with the $2.75 and a couple hours. Could work right off the bat as well.

If it works right off the bat, will you buy me a lottery ticket?

LOL Dennis...

Good point though. My 3Com card worked with no problems using existing drivers I had on my Axim. If you have a Xircom or similar card, you might be out of luck since I don't know that they ever support those modems on PPC...

What about the voltage thing? Thought this could be a problem with the card being underpowered?

Yea, that would be trouble too. I looked at all my PC Card devices and they are all 3volt... I assume most PC Card devices in the last year are that too... Can't say an old modem would be though.... If it says 5volt then you are in trouble.

You could use this though....

hey newaximser!
I got the pcmcia card on ebay for $2.75 -- ok, I cheated a little, the shipping was $3 making it a total of $5.75.

The real catch was this, it was advertised as a 33 K modem, so the price was low. But nobody bothered to check the manufacturer's site where there was a free firmware update to v90 or 56K.

-- as a friend of mine used to say - sometimes you get lucky and put your hand down an arab latrine and pull out a peanut butter sandwich ...

Cheers

What is the name brand? I'd love to know what PCMCIA modems support PPC 2002. Most of the one's i've found do not...
