Thumb-sized speaker attachment?
With all the complaints about the axim's crappy speaker, I think I've got an idea about a simple and maybe even cheap way to get around this.
but so far i haven't found any material examples of this idea:
why not just buy little thumb-sized speakers that have no cords and only an audio jack--if you don't like the axim's speaker you just buy one of these and tack it on to your axim in the headphone jack and voila, you've got a first-class speaker that doesn't take up more than an extra 7/8" of space at the top of your axim. it'd probably only have to stick out as much as a CF wifi card, given that the built-in speaker is only the size of a dime.
has ANYONE seen anything like what I'm talking about? cuz I'd like to get one....:p
to give you a better idea of what I mean, I've attached a crude sketch:

Thumb-sized speaker attachment
Radio Shack made just such a device in the 1980s; maybe they still do. I had one back then and used it for some years on a Sony Walkman. Wish I could find it to use on my Axim now!

Check this out
This isn't exactly what you asked for but it seems like a pretty good idea. You could probably velcro it to the back of the axim and the cord is very short.

It's debatable as to how much you'd actually improve upon the sound. It's not difficult to make a small speaker that is clear at low volumes, which is why you can get high-quality headphones. But making a 1" speaker that will output sufficient volume without distorting is a completely different story.
If you want decent, portable sound, get a set of Sony personal travel speakers or something like them:

Good idea. This should be able to be accomplished. You could probably sell a bunch if the price is kept low enough.

Great idea, thumbsize speaker. I'm going to check the electronics I have lieing around. I'll see if I can throw something together.

Could you use the speaker from an old set of headphones?

Yes...looks like that, but I would like it half the width. Maybe one speaker. So you don't have to turn it to use a WiFi or GPS or larger CF card.
But this may work.
As far as a headphone speaker...I think a small pocket radio speaker would be better.

I'd consider getting one of those, but they are kinda big. One speaker would be better....
...and they're also only available in Europe.

Heck, it meant to be the same speaker set as above, i'll try this picture link http://www.pearl.de/images/large/pe-4602.jpg
It's only 4,90Euro there, but I suspect it's some asian stuff offered under different brands. This one was called a "Q-Sonic" one. I'm pretty sure you'll find it in the US as well.
Google for "mini speakers price mp3" and look into junk shops, it's somewhere out there.
