CF, SD, memory cards...HELP

Hi,
well i just got my first ppc this weekend, which was a Axim :)
Im very very happy with it, i have quite a few games on it as well. And ive noticed a really big difference in how fast my start menu loads, my calender, and today screen ect. So im guessing its because i have so much stuff on it. So im probally going to have to get a memory card soon to store some of this stuff on. Which do you recommend? and are they easy to use? I have the 400Mhz, and Pocket PC 2003 OS, if that makes any difference.
Also whats the diffence between CF and SD, whats better??
Thanks in advance
Megan

Compact flash you can get up to 1gig .. And they are cheaper than SD cards ...

SD card go up to 512megs but are more expensive that CF cards .. Some brands don't always work well with the Axim ... But I like using these for memory as it leaves the CF slot open for other things like WiFi, BlueTooth, GPS, IR Extender, Camera etc etc ...

check Cosco's, BJ's and the price club, i got a 256 MB SD for 63 bucks, they also had a 256 CF for 57
remember, the more you install on you AXIM into the ram, you looose ram to run the system, just go to <start menu><Settings>tab over to <SYSTEM><MEMORY> this will let you see how much Ram you have

Don't forget that you can write protect the SD card. Not a feature I use, but necessary for some :).

Shopping around is important- memory card prices can vary by a large amount.

Who says you can only have one of each? You can have as many as you want and swap them in and out as you need them. For instance if videos or MP3's are your thing, you could have several cards each loaded with music. Pick the one you want to listen to and put it in there.

The thing about memory cards is that stores combine rebates with them and use them for loss leaders. I bought a 128MB SD a few months ago for $45 after rebate. I have seen them for sale other places for twice that. I could have done a little better by shopping the internet but I didn't want to wait.

I would recommend that you scan old messages in the "memory deals" forum on this site, pick out some retailers that offer deals, then search their sites for deals. This will give you an idea of the prices available at the time you are shopping and this will guide you so you don't pay too much, whether you decide to shop online, ebay, or in real stores.

i got my pqi sd card for bout $50 at fry's, and a 32mb cf card for $9.95 @ micro center. i just bought from e-bay a 1gb kingston cf card for $168.00 is that a good deal? this lil critters fill up sooo fast. i use the axim as an mp3 player (just connect it to an external speaker) and an ebook reader, and those mp3 files take up so much mb's (the theme from jurrasic park is a whooping 8 mb!).

i have a stupid question for u guys. what's the difference between a type I and a type II cf card? will both work on the axim? thanks.

The axim has a type II slot, but both type I and II will fit (and work) in it.

The difference in Type I and Type II CF cards is the actual thickness of the card. The Axim has a large enough slot to use either type of card. If you put in a thinner type I card there will be a little gap that you can see from the top of the Axim. It doesn't hurt anything.

I ordered a Lexar 256 SD card 6weeks ago from Buy.com and never came. It was a great deal of $64.00 with free shipping and had a $20 rebate. Think this is a case of false advertiseing . I cancelled the order and now looking for another deal. Has anyone had a similiar experiance from Buy.com?

Currently im bidding on an ebay auction for a NEW 256MB Sandisk Compact Flash card. Its at .11 cents right now :) but im guessing it wont stay as low as im hoping.
I read in some other threads that some Sandisk cards work and then they dont. I also heard something about needing to format and need to put a my documents on the card. What does it mean by format the card?
Thanks in advance
Megan
