I bought a socket 56k modem (used) cheap on ebay. It was easy to set up and works great. The socket will step down from 56k if you're on a lousy phone line; I don't think all modems do. You might want to check that before you buy, if you have noisy lines (or might be in hotels or whatever that do).

To answer your question, the modem works fine. Plus, the miserable slowness of PIE is easier to take knowing you're on dialup!

I got the compUSA version with the speaker for $30 clearence and it works. I had a Targus and Ambicom, but neither worked. I read one site that said these did not have auto selection of slower speeds, and my lines have lots of noise, so I never connect at 56k. Don't know if that is the reason, but it seemed to agree.

I've have a Targus 56K modem that I picked up on sale for $30 on Amazon. Easy install, and after a bit of messing with "connections" settings, it works fine. At home I use a wireless SMC cf card, but on the road, having a modem provides more access.
