X5 as a universal remote

SHORT STORY:
I need a Compact Flash CIR card to plug into an X5 and I can't find one, OR I need something that would do the job as well.

LONG STORY:
Alright. I've got a media center machine (custom built Core Duo box running MediaPortal) and I've got a cheapass remote for it. I don't own a universal remote, but I'd LOVE to have a Harmony 1000i to hit up the HTPC, the surround, the TV, etc, but I'm not spending all that cash.

What I have instead is a spare X5 running Mobile 2002 and two Opticon PDA barcode scanners running Mobile2003 (not SE). The barcode scanners were my first choice since they're a bit more rugged and they require firm screen taps, because they're meant to be used with fingertips not stylii. That didn't work out because they don't have a strong enough IRDA blaster on the one hand, and what they do have is on the left side of the unit on the other.

So I decided my spare X5 would do the trick. Its got the IRDA on top... but it doesn't have the range either. So now I'm thinking there's an empty Compact Flash slot up there too... why not a CF CIR card? Except I can't find one. Does such a beast exist?

I'm not set on any software as yet, and worse comes to worst, I can just write my own if such a CIR card shows up to Windows as standard IRDA or CIR hardware.

Failing all this, I might have to go the Promixis route and set an IR blaster somewhere it can tag all the AV equipment and run it from the MediaPortal machine controlled via Wifi.

I bought this a while back for my X5 (wm03) and it works pretty good. See if this would help you in anyway

UltraMote® Universal Remote Package for Pocket PCs

Search ultramote in the search on aximsite. I think people have used other SW with the extender.

oh that's exactly what I want--and the price is wonderful! :)

Even if it doesn't work well, I'll only be out the price of a night at the movies.

I noticed you said WM03. I wonder if it'll work with 02 or if I'll have to track down the upgrade disc.

If the vendor site does not specify what os they support, send them an email, especially if you want to keep the 2002 os on your x5.

Its no o much that I want to keep the 2002, its that I don't have an upgrade CD and getting one will be a bit of a bother. No one wants to ship to Australia.

Louis,

Did you try UltraMote? Was it any good? Just interested as I'm keen to write my own custom remote software but at that price if it's any good I'll just buy it instead.

If you didn't try that did you have any luck with any of the other remote packages out there? I noticed there are quite a few and they all seem to work with the X5 and WM2003 (which I have on my X5)... think you should still be OK with WM2002 with most of them though as they just need to use the basic IR commands.

Also did you find a IRDA CF card to use?

Cheers,

Mike

WinCESoft's RemoteControl II supports all available CF- IR- extender cards and is PPC 2002 compatible :)
