SmartPad Help

OK, I just installed the new Windows upgrade (05). I heard the the SmartPad would work with this version. I loaded the SmartPad drivers (v3.3) but it still doesn't work.

And I've noticed that InkNote loads and unloads REALLY slowly.

Anyone else having a problem with the SmartPad? Any work arounds? Thoughts?

TIA,
AW

Hi,
I have this product which I bought in the UK for half its recommended price and it works a treat. I see you are using the right version of InkNote Manager (V3.3) which supports WM 2003.
This version also supports, or says it does, the Axim.
The problem I initially had was to get the right COM port showing and also to take out the tick from the "accept all beams" box in settings/connections/beam. Different makes of machine use different COM ports. I use COM port 2.
The customer support service from the UK was exemplary. Look at this for the support numbers for where you live - http://www.siibusinessproducts.com/s...0-inmguide.pdf

I have found that InkNote Manager opens as fast (or as slow depending on how you look at it) as other programs.
It's a great product but obviously not so if you can't get it to work!
Best of luck..

dougprocter,

Thank you for your response. I've tried Sieko support a few times, but I end up on hold for over a half hour.

Anyway, in Windows, I did:
Start/Settings/Connections/Beam

and unchecked the "Receive all incoming beams" box. That's the only box I see under Beams.

In InkNote Manager, I hit:
Setup/Tablet Properties

I selected all the COM ports with no luck.

How do you have the other boxes set up? I have:
Tablet active - unchecked
Enable tablet only in InkNoteMgr - checked
Use tablet as kybd in other apps - unchecked

I also get a "You must make the pen active before testing" message when I try to test. I put in new batteries in both the pen and the SmartPad, too.

Were there any other settings changed?

Thanks,
AW

Hi AW,
There are some differences between our two setups. Firstly put a tick in the Tablet Active box, that may be the reason you are getting the message about the active pen. The other two boxes. I have a tick in the "use keyboard in other appts" box as I use the keyboard for entering things in word/contacts etc. So tick this and remove the tick from the "enable tablet only in InkNote Manager" box if you want to do this.
Then try all the COM ports again. I think the reason you are having problems is because you have not made the tablet active. By the way, what COM ports do you get the choice of?
Hope this helps again

dougproctor,

Got it!!

I guess it helps to have the right boxes checked. I have access to 4 ports, and it finally worked on COM4.

Many, many thanks for all your help.

If you are not averse to refurb units, you can get SmartPad for PocketPCs here for $49.95:

http://www.siibusinessproducts.com/p...s/refurbs.html

I am holding off, waiting for somebody (Seiko?) to design a pad that allows you to take notes on a pad and then converts your printing or handwriting via Transcriber into PocketWord (.doc or .rtf) file format. :)

There are two products (can't think of their names) that are supposed to do handwriting recognition with this product but I have not had the courage to buy one to see if it works. If I summon up the courage, I will come back!
By the way, you need SmartPad 2e ($59.99) for it to work with Pocket PC and also you need to download InkNote Manager V3.3
V3.2 that comes with the product does not support the Axim or other new machines.

I wish I would have found this thread ealier, would have saved me a trip to CompUSA to return my SmartPad 2. What I would like to have is something that I can take to meetings and write notes on so I can refer to them later, but from what was written here I still needed an other peice of software.

Is this the only product that has a pad that you can beam thing to the Axim??

Cool

For the best prices on inklink and smartpad go to ebay or half.com. I have used the smartpad but never the inklink. If anyone can give me some review information on the inklink please do.

Just to throw this in:

I use a Seiko SmartPad 2 with my X5, and I have no trouble at all. The software works well too. I really like the touch keyboard. Here's a few tips:
The IR port on mine is COM4.
InkNote Manager must be open in the background in order to use the keyboard with other applications.
If your PDA is turned off or goes idle for a while, I usually have to restart InkNote Manager to get the keyboard working again.

Cost for me at RadioShack: about $60, then $20 rebate = $40. Must've been a holiday deal.

Pros: Sleek design.
Cons: Not enough storage space for cables, cards, etc. (I'm using a Norelco leather carrying case to hold them). 2 AAA batteries for writing pad and 1 AAAA battery for pen.
