Hmm Car Charger - USB v. Standard

Hey all,

I recently purchased a GPS package for my Axim that included the USB charger (the one that connects to the Synch cable). I've read a lot of threads about how the USB will not correctly charge the Axim if the battery goes below a certain level (I noticed a drain on mine even with a full charge on my cradle).

So my question is would I be better off buying one of those cigarette lighter chargers that connect to the bottom of the Dell instead of using the Synch cable? Are there any disadvantages to using the non-USB charger?

I use the one that plugs into the round adapter plug on the bottom for my gps setup. The only warning I've got for you is that if you buy non-oem be sure you can return it if it doesn't work! I had awful problems with my old audiovox maestro, and now the dell too, finding third party adapters that will work with it.

I tried a dc adapter and a travel adapter off ebay from a guy I'd bought stuff from before and neither worked on the dell. I lucked out and got a third party dc adapter at compusa that worked on the maestro but a travel charger by the same company didn't work. Fortunately, the maestro and the dell seem to use the same plug (the dell draws a bit more current than the maestro but they're both 5.4 volts). So far my old dc adapter from my old unit is working for the new dell and it does charge the battery.

So if you don't want to spend dell's prices there are other units that work but you might have to send a few back till you find one that will work. (It's really weird, 90% of this stuff rolls off the same assembly line, no one can understand why they work on one machine and not on someone else's. It must have to do with where the machine is made, that's the only thing that makes any sense).

There are lots of people on ebay selling charger setups pretty cheap that are supposed to work on the dell. Just be really careful to ask what their return policy is if the thing doesn't work. Peakcloudy will refund the purchase price and your cost to mail it back so you lose nothing with him if it doesn't work.
