Ambicom CF wireless not working

Hello,

I have a Axim X5 300mhz.

I ordered an Ambicom WL1100C-CF wireless 802.11b card. It is not working right.

The light will blink and sometimes it will pop up with a network, i press connect and it does not connect. BUT, sometimes, it will connect (about 1 out of 10 tries). Going to settings... connections...wireless Ethernet, some of the networks are there, but most of the time they say unavailable or they are not even listed. I know they are available, and ready for 802.11b cards.

Sometimes the card wont even recognize any networks and it will just blink. Removing the card and putting it back in doesn't seem to be a reliable way of fixing it either.

Sometimes a network will go from available to unavailable.

I've tried setting it to work, work work, and even going isp, isp, isp, no luck. Everything on the ambicom utility seems to be default. I have downloaded latest drivers from ambicom(which are the same ones that were on the CD for PC2002).

Help!

thanks

jason

This brings back bad memories....I had one of these cards when I bought my first iPAQ (a 2210). Once in a while it worked great. Most of the time it was terribly frustrating. I tried everything-settings, drivers, etc. It was so bad I won't even put the card on eBay. Too bad, as the 2200 is a great little machine. It was a huge relief to get a new iPAQ 4700 with built in wireless.

I know this doesn't exactly help you, but I'm trying to spare you the pain and anguish of thinking that, just somehow, it's your fault. It ain't.

You say "I know they are available, and ready for 802.11b cards." How? Do you have an 802.11B card in a laptop or PC? If so, they will be able to connect to much weaker signals than the card in a PPC. If you haven't personally connected to the sites then you really cannot be sure they are available for 'B' connections.

In addition to the site Kcallahan pointed you to, you should check out the Check these first part of the Troubleshooting section of the WiFi Guide.

BTW, many people on this site (including myself) had good luck with Ambicom cards.

to throw my 2 cents in, I have this ambicom card for my X5 (wm03) and it worked flawlessly every time. (I say worked because I upgraded to an ipaq 210).

Hey Jason,

Have you made sure that you are using the correct driver for the card, there are two different drivers one for a card that supports only WEP encryption and the driver for the card that supports both WEP and WPA2. You can go to Ambicom's website and check this out. The site will ask you for the MAC address of the card and cards in a certain address sequence only support WEP. The incorrect driver caused similar problems on my Axim X5 until I made the change. Hope this helps.
