Axim X5 Compatibility

I have been using the netgear MA701 wireless cf card with an hp jornada 525, which is a very basic pocket pc. I also use the intel wireless gateway II (model # AP1210) as an access point. Does anyone know if there are any problems with this combination of hardware if used with with the axim x5? I have not bought the x5 yet, so it will most likely have Microsoft Mobile 2003. Thanks!

a lot of people use the netgear card with their ax, shouldn't be a problem. You may want to check netgear's site and see if their drivers for 2003 are out.

ona wireless Access Point it has an ID so it can be found. (SSID) as a security measure you can turn on the broadcasting of the SSID so that some one walking by won't know there is an Access point there or it's name.

Why does that affect how the axim would work?

IIRC I've heard that some cards have had issues when the SSID isn't broadcasting.

I could be mistaken on that though.

SSid

SSID is the name of your network, (wireless access points have a default network name that you should always change immediately in the setup) with it turned on it broadcasts the name of your wireless network and anyone can connect to it if you don't have any security enabled.

SSID should be turned off or to "not broadcast" on the wireless access point if you don't have WEP and/or MAC address filtering going or you just don't want every juvenile idiot with a wireless setup using your internet connection for free or trying to hack into your network. With SSID off, the outside user must know the name of your network (as set in your access point) in order to use your access point.

A determined wardriver can still break into your network with a packet sniffer but turning off your network identification slows them down a bit so hopefully they'd look for easier pickings someplace else.

Something like boingo will know there is an access point available, but it will come up with a blank name next to the little icon if SSID is shut off, so unless the person knows the name of your network (and you should probably change it every once in awhile when too many people know it) they won't be able to use it without hacking to find out the network name.

When I used a pocket pc with my access point the other day, I noticed that my network name appeared in the connection settings on the pocket pc. The pocket pc automatically found the name of the network and accessed it. Does this mean that the ssid is on?

yeah most likely it's on. In the Access Point control panel (a web page) there will be a check box usually that says broadcast SSID

If it wasn't on you wouldn't get a name...

If ssid wasn't on you wouldn't get a network name as far as I know; which is the point. Hackers can discover the network name by packet sniffing traffic but as far as I know there's nothing that does this painlessly and automatically, which is again the point of turning it off. I used dots and commas and dashes in the name for mine making it really hard to just guess it too. What the other guy said, I've also heard, some wireless cards don't play well with access points that don't have ssid broadcast turned on. Obviously a public access point wouldn't have it shut off.
