Don't know if this has been discussed before but I have used cell phone cables in the past with older PPCs to access the Internet. It's a really inexpensive way to have Internet access anywhere you have cell service.
The company that I've always gone through before is called SupplyNet (www.thesupplynet.com) and they are releasing cables for the Axim in mid-March for a variety of cell phones. The cost is around $49.99 per cable and setting it up is very easy.
My cell phone provider is Sprint and because I pay an extra $5/month for web access through my phone, they act as an ISP when you connect the PPC and all you use is cell minutes.
FYI, I just upgraded my service with Sprint last month to get on their PCS Vision plan. It's about $80/month but includes unlimited free Internet access. I use my cell phone heavily with my work so my company pays the usage fee. I've already picked up a USB cable off of ebay for my phone so I can access the 'net from my laptop using my phone. I'll be looking for this cable from SupplyNet. Sounds great to me. Thanks for the tip!
Same situation here, although I bought the cable directly from Sprint to connect to my laptop. I'm trying to go without the laptop, and have purchased the cable from supplynet, with an estimated shipping date of 7/21. I'm just not sure how to configure the Ax so it goes directly to PCS Vision - the cable from Sprint came with the PCS Connection software, and I'm not sure how to surf the net with PCS Vision without using some sort of dialup on the cell phone. Any ideas?
Another thread discussed the Verizon service, and you simply program a connection on the Ax connections section to have the phone dial #777 and it would connect...anyone heard anything about configuring for Sprint PCS?
That config. works with Sprint and cable from Gomadic. All you need to do is connect the two cables, sign up for Sprint PCSVision service...($15 more a month) and you're off!
i called sprint and they said they don't support the connection
to any device when i called sprint support.
i was wondering if anybody can clear few thing for me
15 dollars will get you unlimited internet access with
the notebook and PDA ?
will they try to make you pay extra if you do.
i read from there website there is a diff plan for internet.
Go with T-Mobile and pay $9.95 for UNLIMITED Internet when you also buy a voice plan..
By the way, I've been connecting through my phone via Infrared, cause it seems nobody makes such cable for Nokia phones. Ideally, I would connect my Axim to my Nokia 6800, but can't find the cable. Even though it's not totally practical, Infrared is working for me right now.
I have a motorola V60i cell phone, but my cell phone service is not cdma, therefore it work as a modem. I'm looking into getting service with Sprint on a new phone they have, Samsung vi660. Gomadic does not support this phone. Any idea who would and can provide such service?
I ran into a HUGE PROBLEM with sprint after I told them I was going to use the gomadic cable and my Lg 5350 on my X5 and the sales people told me that it would not cost more. Let's just say they were wrong. I disputed the charges and told them I didn't appreciate being lied to about what I could and couldn't do. It would seem from the boards here that it depends on where you are as to wether this will be a problem for you. Your phone shows that it is dialing into a modem and they charge you by the kb for this. One guy here had a $5000 + bill for using his laptop the first month. That took some explaining.
