CF Modem Connection
First of all, I will say up front that I did search for help with this before asking but was unable to find any responses that covered this. Maybe they're out there, but I couldn't find them.
My problem: I have had my Axim since the first of December and yesterday (2/18) I bought a CF modem. Since last night I have been trying to get this thing online and have had no luck. I have gone through all the connection settings and thought I had it correct but have not been able to get on the internet. I use cable internet at home but I set up a free dial-up service for the axim.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I may be able to help you as I just went through the same issue. Let me know exactly what is happening (or not happening) and I will post a response ASAP.

Riff,
Thanks for the reply. I THINK I might have gotten it working. It didn't seem to want to dial the numbers but I messed around with the Dialing Patterns and Dialing Locations and now it is dialing the number I want but I'm still not connecting. I have a feeling that my account that I set up is not activated yet. If you have any suggestions or help as to what you went through I would still appreciate it as I may have done something wrong.

Another thing, why does it always seem to want to dial the International setting?

make sure that the country and area code stuff under connectios/dialing locations matches the ones in your connection. also make sure that dialing patterns has the correct info. that should take care of it.

My solution to the dialing issues was to enter the dialing patterns screen by tapping connections, then dialing locations, then dialing patterns. Now simply enter the exact number you need to dial into both the local and long distance call entry blocks. Leave the international block empty. This will force the country code prefix off
and allow you to choose whether to dial an area code or not. Hope this solves your problem.

Well, I'm trying to use freedialnow but not getting much luck. I just signed up last night so I'm hoping they just havn't activated my account. I think I have the dialing thing down but now I just have to get the account to kick in.
They are located at:
www.freedialnow.com
Hopefully it will get working because they only charge a $5.00 start up fee then you get 15 hours a month and $.85 an hour after that for a max of $8.50 a month.

Do they require or provide a DNS primary and secondary server address?
I had problems till I remembered I had to configure that into it also.

Actually, yes, they do provide the DNS addresses but I did not think I would need. I just received an email from the ISP that said my account has been activated. At work we use a PBX telephone system so I can't log on with the Axim here. I will try it when I get home and let you know if it works.

I got it to work once but then I returned the modem because I found out that the phone system at my work is a pbx system and I couldn't use the modem. Wasn't any sense in keeping it if I couldn't use it at work.
A suggestion would be to try to manually put in the DNS and alternate DNS addresses, mine worked after I did that.

Question for you guys about this CF modem and the free dial up service. Does this enable you to be out and about (anywhere) and check your email? This is what I'm interested in but hesitated because of the high monthly fees involved. How does this compare with using a cell phone as a modem, if you have one that will work, which I don't. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this before I buy anything. Thanks for any information;)

If you are out and about and find a phone jack you can check your email, assuming you have a web accessible email account, which most ISP's offer.
