Total storage card memory for SD and CF 512MB cards

Total for my SD is 488.25MB

Total for my CF is 487.96MB

Does the Axim take some memory from the cards in order to work??

512 MB is not a true number. When manufacturers quote size, a MB is meant as 1000 KB and KB is 1000 bytes, when in fact it is 1024 bytes in a KB and 1024 KB in a MB. So, 488.25 MB * 1024=499,968 KB * 1024 = 511967232 bytes. Take that and divide by 1000 and you have 511967 KB and divide by 1000 again and you have 511.97 MB, or 512 MB. It is a big game to make things sound bigger than they really are.

The Axim doesn't take it.

Formatting takes a little but the majority of this 'loss' is because of semantics. Memory manufacturers call a MB 1,000,000 bytes while most computer operating systems (including PPC02 and WM03) call a KB 1024 bytes and a MB 1KB * 1KB or 1048576 bytes. If you divide 512 by this number, you'll see you are close to the values the Axim is reporting for your cards.

"Does the Axim take some memory from the cards in order to work??"

Resetting with CF slot empty
ProgMem used: 7.4 MB
Resetting with my CF/48
ProgMem used: 7.5 MB
Resetting with my CF/256
ProgMem used: 7.9 MB

Seems the CF Cards are stealing memory from my AX, not the other way around!

......hehehehh....SimpleTech 512MB SD.....491.25MB-actual.....hheheheheheheh.....

sorry guess that was kinda lame :p

anyway....the issue is a little more confused than just semantics.

in fact, the memory card companies might be totally straight up on this one. KostasK demonstrated to me pretty definitively in a thread in the memory bargains board that the missing memory is pretty much taken by formatting. (I think its the thread about the "new 512MB SD $99 sweet spot.")

i'll get back to you all with an example. strange that I can't recall his line of reasoning just now...

unfortunately, i've been broadcasting this whole million bytes versus megabytes thing which doesn't appear to be too accurate--though it seemed quite convincing--so i've got some self-correction to do.

it is strange that the decimal-format byte totals almost always add up to the advertised number in millions of bytes. this leads me to suspect that perhaps the companies arrange the formatting so that just enough space is left for a decimal-format total that corresponds to the advertised number. anyway i'll check on that thread and get back you all....

Ever since hard drive manufacturers switched from true bytes to million (or billion) bytes, everyone uses million bytes. I can't sell you a 242MB SD card (where MB = 1048576 bytes - actual computer bytes) because I'd be at a marketing disadvantage. However I can sell you a 256MB SD card (where MB = 1000000 bytes - fake computer bytes) because everyone uses that method. Actually my Lexar 256MB SD card is shy over 2 million bytes.
