Question What do I need to do to access the internet?

I just ordered my Axim lastnight from Dell and should be in the next week. I want to take full advantage of it's abilities and one of them being internet use.

Here's what I have to work with.

I have AT&T for my cell phone company and use the motorolla V-120T which is basically the same thing as the V-60

I have Charter for my internet company at home and use a cable modem

Not sure what else you need to know but from my understanding I'm probably going to need a modem cf card and I'm not sure what else.

Thanks for your help

Generally speaking, I believe there are 4 ways to access the internet via your Axim.

1) Using your PCs internet connection by passing-through the PC via an ActiveSync Session using the sync Cradle/Cable. Obviously this has the least amount of "mobility" but no additional hardware is needed.

2) Wireless through your wireless network or wireless sync session using your network's internet connection. A little more mobility but must be in range of your Wireless Access Point. Obviously you must have access to a wireless network and have a WiFi CF card for your Axim.

3) Through a wired dial-up connection. Need access to a wired phone line. Requires a CF-modem card for your Axim.

4) Through a dial-up connection (using your cell phone). Can be used anywhere you are in range of your cellular service. Other than the cable to connect your Axim and cell phone, no other hardware is needed. Here is the link to a web site with more info.

To use either of the last two options you must have an ISP that supports dial-up connection (I know you mentioned you currently connect via cable modem). In the last option, your cellular service provider must support data transmission (I think most do).

Thanks for your response. Right afterwards I ordered the cable for my phone to connect to my Dell. I called my internet provider and Charter does not support a dial up modem so I'm going to have to find a dial up internet provider for my Dell. Any cheap idea's on internet providers.

One more question please, I ordered the keyboard from Dell for my PDA but was wondering wether or not this will work when accessing the internet since my cell phone connects to the bottom of the PDA which I think is where it mounts to the keyboard. Should I cancell the keyboard and order a wirless keyboard.

Sorry about the long winded message.
Steve

Mad

Oh brother, I just called AT&T and she wasn't sure if AT&T supports Data transmission.

Is anybody else using AT&T for their cellular provider.

Thanks
Steve

There is another way to connect your phone to the Axim, throught the cf slot. I saw a kit this weekend at Fry's that is made for several Motorola phones.

pmoto, this question is for you...

You posted that you could access the internet thru ActiveSync - I was able to do this happily, but now for some reason I keep getting a message saying "unable to connect with current settings. To change your connection settings, tap settings.

Any clue what I need to do to be able to access the web this way again?

Thanks for your help!

webster603,

I have all three connections settings set to Work Settings and am able to access the internet at home (primary partnership) as well as at work (guest partnership) without any problems.

My home PC connects to the internet via a cable modem and at work my PC conects via a LAN. Using Work Settings works for both.

I think the most important setting is the first one (the one about connecting to the internet). Try setting this to Work Settings and see if that solves your problem.

Also, after making sure the current connection is using Work Settings tap on the Modify button and then the Proxy Settings tab. Make sure there is a check mark by This network connects to the internet

If this doesn't work, try a soft reset, check the settings again to make sure the reset didn't change them, then try to connect. Sometimes the Axim seems to get "confused" and a soft reset is needed to clear its "mind".

dial up

hey smshafer. been surfing around and i thought i remember seeing a "nic" card for the axim. if what i saw is correct then you should be able to connect your ax using the cable modem. charter uses either a usb connection or a nic card connection(which is recommended because its a more stable connection). you might want to check into that with charter providing you can locate the nic card for the axim.( if i find it i'll be sure to info you) secondly, charter does support a dial-up connection but would rather have you use broadband. (ya gotta love promotions)

on the lighter side, has anyone heard of any AOL or MSN or the like for the axim? i'm going back on the road shortly and would like to not have to deal with a local isp. thanks and good luck

Cool

Papa Bear,
Thanks for your response. I'm going to contact Charter regarding Dial up. That's frustrating they told me something else. I have no problem connecting to the internet via MSN but I would certainly like to dial up using a 800 number thus if I'm in hotels, etc it's a whole lot less expensive.

As for the NIC card, I'm not familiar with that, could you please explain more to me.

Thanks
Steve

nic card

hey steve, how is your desktop/laptop connected to your cable modem? did you use a usb connection or the ethernet connection? ethernet=nic looks like an oversized telephone port. its a better connection regarding the cable modem. if you did the self install kit that charter gave you then you most likely did a usb connection. nic cards are not hard to install if thats what you want but i believe your configuation will have to be re-done. (not sure about it so please don't quote me) in my area of michigan charter does offer a dial up service but it might not be the case where you live....although highly unlikely. let me know how you make out
