Question Keyboard + Gaming 0n axim

I have a 24 hour bus ride to New Orleans coming up soon, and I need entertainment. My axim can provide it, but whenever i try to play games on it the directional pad feels like im about to break it.

I was wondering if anyone here has played games with their axim (or any other PDA) using a infrared keyboard as the controller? I would like to get a keyboard but dell's cost for theirs is just too much, and the infrared ones are cheaper.

Well the battery also wont last near as long as your bus ride is.

What games do you have?

My Pocketop keyboard so far has worked--some. Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man are fine, DigDug moved around but wouldn't allow a fifth button for firing. I have other (better) games, but those are the only ones I've tried so far.

Let me know what you're thinking about playing and if I have it, I'll try it out.

i would also like to know if the snap on keyboard would be good for gaming. the dpad is too soft more my liking and its really close to the 3 button when you are moving right and trying to fire.

The only game that I am sure will work with a keyboard is NetHack. I haven't really tried many others.

I have the MorphGear emulator, and it will not work with the keyboard. I am not sure about the other NES emulators, though.

Just tried Galaga using pocketNESter and the Pocketop keyboard. Same results as the other games: left/right directions work, but nothing else. It seems that you can use the arrow keys to input anything that the DPad does, but no other keys will work.

Maybe somebody smarter than me can tackle this one--

Speaking of games....

I just purchased a keyboard from pocket solutions. I'll let you know how it work w/ games when i get it. While on the topic of emulators though, anyone know an SNES one? I would be in heaven playing Chrono Trigger on my axim! :D

2 answers for you:

1) I have tried the pocket solutions keyboard with PocketNester, the problem is that I can't get PocketNester to work in any rotated mode, and the IR keyboard works very poorly when the Axim is not rotated (the reflector for the IR doesn't work well w/ the Axim. However, I was able to assign all buttons to keys on the keyboard, and that means I was effectively able to get it to work with all functions, on all the games I tried. Just that rotating problem makes it impractical for me though. What we really need is for someone to figure out how to hook up an original NES gamepad to the Axim.

2) SNES emulator: yes there is one out there, available in beta, available here.

Morphgear and PocketSNES both work with the Targus universal IR keyboard. I have been playing Chrono Trigger on both and found that the sound works better on Morphgear and is a little faster, but the saves don't work very well. Both are free for the SNES part and Morphgear has extra emulators that you can pay for.

Anyone know any other games that might work. My guess with my driver is that it emulates a software key being pressed, so you get the same reaction if you would press the IR keyboard button or the key on the soft menu. If that is true, then any game that uses the soft keyboard would also work.
