I'd leave the CF for devices etc and use SD for your storage. I picked up a SD Lexar 256MB stick at CompUSA for 80 bucks and its working out quite well.

I prefer the SD card so that I can use my wireless CF card at the same time.

If I had any money I'd buy one CF card for Mp3's, movies, etc. and 2 SD cards. One for programs, and the other for some mp3's so I can still listen to music if I have something like a wifi card in the CF slot.

It really depends on what you intend to use it for... CF has potentialy higher capacities, at about $50 / 256 MB, so $50 for 256, $100 for 512, and $200 for 1 gig (memory, not drive).

SD is a little bit more, but really ALL you can use it for is memory. But Iwould use SD if you need memory for program,s or things you don't want to be removed period. Use CF for things like MP3s, or media that don't matter if they are in or out of the device. mine is used for Backups, MP3s, and file transfer using CF -> USB adapter (easier than using sunc cable just for moving files... and a hell of a lot faster :))

Also, do you really think you'll need the CF for some kind of peripheral?

I sure do .. I am a Real Estate Appraiser and use a program called "ClickNotes" on my AX it has saved me so much time that it paid for my AX after my second appraisal. I have it use pocket streets that take me to my appointments so GPS for 1 and maybe looking at a CF camera, 640 is all i take anyway so maybe a good deal for me.

Ya I wanted to originally get a SD card so I could use CF for wireless etc and still have extra memory, but there aren't as many good SD deals around. So instead I ordered a Lexar 12x 256 CF card for $42 after rebate. Eventually I'll get a SD card.

I have a 256MB SD card that I never take out. I install all my programs there. I would have a 512 card in there if they weren't so expensive.

I have a 256MB CF card that I use to shuffle files between my AX, home desktop/laptop, and work PC. I also have a 512MB CF card that is full of MP3s.

So I would recommend buying as large a SD card as you can afford, and treat it as "installed" memory. Then have a couple CF cards laying around for whatever.

Question Clarification, please?

Forgive me, I've never used CF and SD cards before. My obsolescent Jornada has a CF slot, but I've never taken advantage of it.

Now, with my wonderful new Axim due to be delivered next week, I'm trying to understand this: I'm seeing recommendations that SD be used for extra program memory, and CF for transferable files (MP3s, MPEGs, whatever).

Why? Why is the CF preferable for those types of files? Simply because CF is a bit cheaper than SD?

I ordered a 256MB SD card along with my new toy, and that's all I can afford right now. I will be able to use it for music etc., right?

Also, I know the formula for minutes/MB for music files (both MP3 and WMA), but what about for MPEG movies? Anyone have that figure?

Thanks!

You can use either SD or CF for games, apps, mp3s, mpegs, etc. The reason why some people prefer having some SD memory, is that SD is only used for memory, no peripherials, so its like having extra built in memory that they never have to take out. CF on the other hand, is what you use extra peripherials with, such as wireless, camera, gps, etc. So memory or anything that is CF gets removed more often if you have these devices.

Oh I see, so it's more a matter of leaving the CF slot free for a modem or whatever, is that it?

Good, that shouldn't be an issue for me, then. I don't intend to use a modem or any other peripheral at this point. I would like to be able to view MPEGs on my Axim, though, and I suspect 256MB may be a little spare for that purpose. Would you agree?

Anyway, thanks for the info, much obliged. :)

If you want it for MPEGs, I would get CF without a doubt, speed doesn't really matter much, and you need all the space you can get. for MPEGs I would actually get a 512 or 1gig, if you can afford it. You should be able to find 1 gig for around $200 in memory... less if you get drive, but I woudln't use those anway as they seem to have some real problems... with battery power for example, wihch when constantly accessing a file like an MPEG would be a big problem I bet.

I personally am going to wait for 512/1 gig prices to come down. I can't justify spending 200 dollars on memory when it costs more than my whole axim after rebate.
