Pharos GPS

Just had an e-mail from Pharos about their new GPS for the AXIM

Matbe a better solution than a CF GPS as it free's up the CF slot

Trying to get delivery to the UK (will get a price for us Brits)

You have a link to the Pharos site? How does it free up the CF slot?

Thanks

I got the Pharos system last week. It's not bad, but I'm not real crazy about the software (very few POI, doesn't pick the "direct route"). All in all not bad. Had a tech issue, but delt direct w/Pharos thru email and phone. Very responsive! I bought from yourmobildesk.com for $239(?) their shipping was the lowest.

I've been told that either Destinator or TomTom are the best software to use, but not sure if its compatible with the Pharos (should be)
worth E-mailing Pharos to find out

I'm trying xmap now. I'd prefere NOT to spend more on software after buying the GPS.

so far no good..........

I just got the new Dell Cable for the Pharos iGPS-180.

The part # is CA-018, but it is not listed on the PharosGps.com website.... you will have to order it directly from pharos for now.

It is $49 and is SUPPOSED to let you use your old iGPS-180 from one of their other kits with your Dell....

Mine is from my old iPaq, & I am using the Ostia 2003 software, but I cannot get the damn thing to work.

It keeps locking up my Axim & takes a hard reset to get it to work again....

Has anyone gotten this to work, or is anyone else having this problem?

Please let me know I am not alone...........

chouser,

I have the same problem. I got my Pharos GPS package (GPS unit wich splits into power cord and cord that goes to GPS, Ostia software, and mounting), but whenever, I plug in the cable into my PPC it freezes up my Axim and then somehow drains battery completely wich leads to a hard reset. It happened twice for last three days. I will call Pharos last time today and if they will not address this issue I will pack this piece of sh$$$t and send it back!

Using Pharos GPS (PK038) with Dell Axim

Hi All,

My name is George Varela, Sales Manager for Pharos GPS.

Our AXIM Set-up instruction was mistakenly omitted from the first batch of units shipped. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Below is the text of that set-up sheet...

Please follow the operation steps listed below to use the PK038 with your AXIM X5.

1. Turn on the Pocket PC
2. Launch the Ostia program
3. Open the desired map(s)
4. Tap “GPS”, “Enable GPS”
5. Connect the GPS receiver to the Pocket PC
6. You are ready to use your navigation system

The communication port used must be enabled prior to connecting the receiver. Do this by launching Ostia and Enabling the GPS as instructed above.

Note: If you ever need to reset your AXIM, be sure to disconnect the GPS receiver/cable assembly before you reset. Once you reset the PDA, follow steps 1 to 6 listed above.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,

George

OK, I got it working..... kinda....

Hi,

First - Thanks to the George Varela from Pharos for giving a brief step-by-step. I was wondering why there was no documentation with the part.... I just thought it was because it was so new.
Second - I was finally able to get my iGPS-180 and the CA-018 Axim adapter to work....kind-of......

It turns out that the Y-adapter (CA-018) that I purchased from Pharos is shorted out. I tested it with an OHM meter and if I move the cable around, the resistance fluctuates, then goes into a dead-short.

Well, I was able to set it all in place and wiggle the cord to a non-shorted position and got it to work for about 20 minutes, but if I touched it or tried to drive the car, it would short out the power again. I can't believe the fuse didn't blow on the cig-lighter adapter...... they must use a pretty fault-tolerant cig-adapter power adapter.

This is the important part: The reason it kept locking my Axim up was because during the troubleshooting process, I moved the com settings around and tried all the com ports manually. I have found out the hard way that if you set the enable the gps on the same com prot as your infrared port, then you will have big issues until you manually make a registry change. So I made that change and was able to successfully test the cable as long as I left it in place and did not touch it.

I called pharos today to try to get a new cable & got a guy from their tech support that wanted me to send the piece in for them to test.
I explained that I really needed this and let him know that I had already tested it with my ohm meter and he was finally willing to advance-ship me the cable.

The only beef I have is that they want me to pay the shipping for shipping the defective unit back. I have used the iGPS with my old iPaq and it worked great and I cannot wait to get it back up and running with my Dell.

Initial impression of my Pharos GPS CF card

I was able to test out my new Pharos CF card this morning here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, and although it worked as I would have expected it to, I was disappointed by the number of streets that were missing from their Ostia map software.

I have been using Streets and Trips by Microsoft on my PC, and I really like it's user interface. Since Pocket Streets is the Pocket PC counterpart of that application, I think I will give it a try to see if it does a better job than Ostia.

I'll post more in-depth impressions of both once I've had an opportunity to compare them.

Scott

Yep, I've been using my Pharos iGPS CF with my Axim for a week or so now, I was real amazed at the satellite reception, but also was disapointed with the Ostia maps. Not necessarily missing streets, but the relationship of my vehicle to some of the roads. In other words, it appeared that I was traveling off the shoulder of the road several hundered feet on a few streets around town and not directly over the direct route of the street, if that makes sense.

Scott, please keep me posted on your findings with Pocket Streets.

Thanks,

tlovell
