Worried Splish, Splash - Axim took a bath

It did not submurge, but was splashed on. PDA went dead. Dried off as well as possible and let dry out. Would not turn on. Placed in cradle and it instantly popped on. Lost all data (owners info, settings, etc), but not programs. Checked Battery levels and all show 100%. However, when taking pda out of cradle, power lost. Dead. Placed back in cradle and pda loses all settings again, but is working fine. Disconnected main battery from pda, placed in charging portion on back of cradle and it started out as yellow, then went to green. This tells me that it should be charged. Installed main battery back on pda, but nothing, not power, won't boot, nothing. Placed back in cradle and it works fine. Is my PDA giving a false reading with main battery or did the water just screw up battery connection? I don't really want to spend a $100+ on a battery, if the problem may be something else. Any guidance would be greatly welcome.

Can you run the Axim diags on it while its powered on in the cradle? This could posdibly provide the nature of the issue. This is assuming that there is a diagnostic util for the X5 series.

Have you try to hard reset the unit? Also clean the battery connectors on the axim and the battery itself.

How long did it stay yellow (I think its orange but yellow meh..)
Because if it always changes from orange to green then your Lithium Ion got shorted and its protection circuit kicked in and well killed itself to prevent a fire..
Ebay is now your friend, you can get a nice one for about $25ish

Thanks for the quick responses. I looked for the dianostic utility. Didn't find it. And from the other responses, the problem IS with the battery and not the PDA. I am doing a quick search on Ebay for replacements and so far, I'm quite suprised with the low price of the extended battery. I may get two. . . . Again, thanks for responding with straight forward suggestions. Once I replaced the battery, I will let you know.

As far as I know, there is no diagnostic utility for the X5.

yeah there is no Axim Diagnostics for the X5, only the x3,x30, and i guess the x50, but i would recommend going on ebay and buying a mugen battery from mef38 you can get a battery that is better than the original for about 35 dollars

A Co-Worker has same pda as I, so we switched main batteries. I installed his battery onto my pda and it did not work. He put my battery on his pda and his pda worked fine. He checked the power level and my battery showed to be at 100%. Strange, confused. My PDA dell axim x5 only works when connected to craddle, with or without main battery. Once removed from craddle, pda will not function at all???

I would also remove the backup battery and let the whole thing dry for a couple of days. warmth is good so if you have a warm, but not too hot, and dry place to put it let it stay there for a couple of days and see what happens. when you say it got splashed on, just how wet did it get? I have splashed mine numerous times and haven't had problems.

True! My mobile phone went through a full washing-machine cycle after I left it in the pocket of my jeans. I removed the battery and left it in the airing-cupboard for about 4 days. On the second day it would turn on but there was nothing on the display. On the third day it turned on and the display lit up but with nothing to see. On the fourth day the phone seemed to be working but there was still a little condensation on the inside of the screen. On the fifth day this was gone and the phone has worked perfectly ever since.

Maybe Radar 500 should try this with the Axim. Leave it alone and let it dry out.

"Let it dry out" is good advice (2 days min in a Warm dry room). Even with a splash, chances are it still has some water in it as condensation and that could be bad news in the future. Check your back up battery compartment as well)

Sounds like no power from battery reaching unit.(DUH)

If it still does not work clean the contacts on the case and battery with a dry cloth (NOT EMERY!) to remove any contamination.

You did not say if it dropped or hit anything - if so check the battery contacts on the unit - they may have been pushed down and away from the battery. Lift GENTLY with a cocktail stick (or the stylus?). The way the battery charger behaves it suggests one or output contacts are not conducting.

Next it may mean opening your unit to check for corrosion around the contacts/loose contacts - leave the choice to you as it invalidates the guarantee.

Does not sound a major issue but it could take some patience to solve this one.

Sorry to hear this grim news. Well this could be good news since you have an older PDA and you could get a seveir update aka x50v. Sounds like the water shorted out your battery connectors on the main board.

As an aside DO NOT try and wash/dry out the unit with a volatile solvent or oil. A friend did this with some lab equipment and it stripped the insulation on the main board in a flash.
