Problem using wifi card with pocket pc 2002
So I bought this from woot, and installed it and was able to get the green led light working and was able to select my wireless network at home. I was unable to connect to the net though. Then when I restarted or reset my pda, the green LED stopped working. My Wi Fi Utility was working very very slow, and I was unable to find any networks.
As I started to do more research online, I found this site which states that for the SanDisk Connect Plus CF WiFi + 128MB Memory card for Pocket PC,
" This card [Sandisk] does not work correctly with Dell Axim X5 Pocket PCs running Pocket PC 2002 OS. It does work fine with Dells running Pocket PC 2003 (aka Windows Mobile 2003) OS. We also tried it with several iPAQs, including the 2215 and it worked well."
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tips..._Plus_wifi.htm
I have a Pocket PC 2002 OS. Has anyone else gotten it to work on the pocket pc 2002 model of axim x5?
I've installed the driver from the sandisk website as well, but no luck.
Also, when I insert the wi fi card into the slot, I get a prompt asking me if I want to format the card. If I do format it, then... well, its formatted. But if I don't format it, the system doesn't recognize the memory space available on the card or allow me to transfer anything to that cf drive. Weird...
Finally, Is there a way to upgrade my OS from pocket pc 2002 to pocket pc 2003?

People occasionally sell the upgrade CD on eBay. AFAIK, no one was able to get both WiFi and the memory to work with the card on the X5 with PPC02. A few people (including in this thread) have had success with WM03 on their Axim.

Hummmmmm ok... at this rate, after reading THAT... and all theother stuff I've read to the same effect, And, knowing that this card does work just fine on my Dell Inspiron 8500 Laptop... -Actually- really beautifully in fact- Has anyone had really fantastic luck with another card to get the x5 up and running- preferably at a reasonable-ish price?
Ideally, what I need to do is to be able to check the value of rare books while I'm out "scouting"- or shopping, on the weekends- so I don't buy junk or miss excellent finds. That was the whole point of buying the gizzzmo. As I said, the Dell Tech SPECIFICALLY said this was the one that was ready to go for this... I wrote the model down and all... GRRRR... 'Course...That's not their problem now I'm sure.
Ugh.. ennnneyway....
Ideas?

In a word, yes.
I have the Linksys WCF-12 but my best friend bought the SanDisk combo card. Of course, we're both running WM2k3 and the drivers that came with the card were useless. We just went to the SanDisk website, pulled down the latest drivers, and now he's surfing away. If you make the mistake of installing the drivers that came with the card, completely remove them before trying to download and install the latest drivers.

yea, i just made the MISTAKE of buying the SanDisk WiFi + 128 CF and it would not work even after upgrading from 2002 to WM 2003 and talking with both Dell and SnDsk. IN the end It wouldn't work. I could never get the memory to work rightr and it wanted to do a soft reset each time my X5 went off. And maybe once in a while it would ask if you wanted to format the CF card. Such is life. I'm now trying to get my money back.
Any recomendations on a replacement wifi card??

my sandisk worked
I got mine from woot and at first it didnt work because I used the cd. After I uninstalled the cd version and installed the 2003 driver from tha sandisk site, it works. I dont have a wireless on my pc yet but was able to browse for a few seconds on a nearby server. Anyone know of good software to search for available servers, I tried Hitchhiker.

Yes and Yes
The WCF-12 works beautifully with my X5 and, yes, it came with WM2k3. My wife's, which I bought for her before I got mine, came with PPC2k2 and I bought the upgrade. The each work equally well (I've seen no issues that make the two differ in any way).
As with my friend and the SanDisk 128/WiFi, the CD for my Linksys card only had PPC2k2 drivers/utilities. Of course the utilities were going to be useless anyway since Microsoft integrated a lot of the typical WiFi utility features into WM2k3. So, at first I located the Intersil PRISM drivers (the chip the Linksys and most other WiFi cards are based on) and used them, but eventually Linksys came out with WM2k3 drivers. I completely removed the Intersil drivers and loaded the new Linksys ones and haven't looked back.
The only thing about completely relying on the operating system instead of an OEM utility is that you don't see the signal strength in your task bar. You have to tap on the Connection icon on Start bar and you'll get an info bubble that shows an anemic signal strength meter---strictly no-frills.
I threw on Pocket WinCE and it adds some nice graphical display and control of various WiFi connections and history. I've not been impressed with other WiFi utilities so far.

so therefore, you're now using the linksys with the 2003 drivers from link and you've got the signal bar and everything works fine and dandy, right?
