What's everyones thoughts about switching from PPC2002 to PPC2003 software. Will most of the programs I have on my X5 still work after I install the upgrade? or will I have to reinstall everything?
upgrading to 2003 from 2002 is not like upgrading windows on a desktop pc or laptop. you have to update the rom to A05, which includes PPC2003. and once the rom update is complete it is like starting from scratch again with the new OS and all your programs will have t be re-installed.
i did the upgrade not long after getting my X5 about 4 months ago, and in my opinion its well worth the effort.
Thanks, I found it on EBay last night but not sure it it is worth switching. Especialy after finaly getting my wi-fi to work with 2002. Is it going to screw up that or is that a quick fix.

it depends on the wifi card and drivers, i have the dell truemobile 1180 wifi card and the drivers for 2003 are readily available on dell's website.
i think it would be a good idea to check the websites of all the manafactures of addiontal hardware to make sure they are compatible with 2003 and there is no conflicts with the x5 running 2003.
I've been trying to accomplish the upgrade but Dell tells me the CD is no longer available. Where do I find the update files, etc? Or better yet, is there a process?
Thanks
Upgrading your dell Axim X5 from PPC 2002 to PPC 2003 is only available by pirating the software.
If you google it you'll find lots of websites describing how to do this and where to get the files.
You will be getting a file that Dell once offered for a small fee of around $30 which was an excellent deal.
The websites use a copy of that original CD and upgrade to PPC 2003 (NOT the Second edition)
It's definitely worth the upgrade. Now you'll be able to get PPC 2003 only applications like Skype to work on your Dell and your browsing will be faster.
If you're worried about which applications or Wifi cards will work you simply have to look at the manufacturer's card.
My Cheapo Ambicom Wifi card just needed a new driver from their website and even SanDisk's Wifi+128 card has a driver for 2003.
The only thing I know doesn't work is the Virtual landscape from jim's software.
But that's pretty much the only thing that doesn't seem to work
My Cheapo Ambicom Wifi card just needed a new driver from their website and even SanDisk's Wifi+128 card has a driver for 2003.
Going slightly off topic
Just be carefull with Sandisk's wifi + memory cards. They are actualy listed on Sandisk's website, Dell's website and the forums here, as not being compatible with the X5. I only found this out after buying the card and i was disapointed when it didnt work, Hence the Dell Truemobile replacement.
You may get yours to work but there have been differnt problesm reported with the card and the X5.
The upgrade can still be found on ebay occasionally
In my mind it is worth the upgrade as some of the connection features work better, and also some programs need 2003 (like skype phone for example)
There are a FEW things that do not work like some of the wifi cards have not released new drivers...but really almost everything that worked on ppc2002 will work on 2k3
When upgrading to 2003 does that mean I would be upgrading to A05 as well? or is that another upgrade I would need to look for if I decide to upgrade to PPC2003

I just got an X5/300 with A02 on it off ebay recently, and had alot of issues with 2002, so I found and slapped A05 on it. Well worth it, seems video playback is a little bit slower, but everything else runs better and no more weird lockups.
My first axim, what a great little unit, and what a great site! :)
