Backup Batt not charging

Hello, Friends.
Can anyone tell me if the backup Batt not recharging is a common problem? I have replaced it 3 times now and it does not seem to want to recharge once it has depleted some.

The backup battery CAN NOT be recharged on the X5.

Never has, and never will.

Welllll...............,that might account for something then. I really thought someone was going to tell me to search the forums first or something zilly like that(which I did not do). By the way there must have been a zillion people who posted the same question as i did, go figure.

Thanks for taking it easy on me.

Why is your backup battery depleteing? Do you just let the main battery die down (maybe it's old?) and then the backup gets used holding your settings? Normally, it'll last for years if the main battery never depletes. I understand your confusion..I believe Li-ION batteries are the only ones that come both in rechargeable and non rechargeable format...which really makes no sense to me...

My main depletes over time. You see I work overseas and can not always take it with me. As I am gone months at a time the battery is usually dead when I return. Just something I have to live with,

"Idle" main battery life

Salty Steve,

From what I've read, the RAM on the X5 typically consumes ~ 7mA, even when the device is turned off. I believe in the new Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile 5 with Persistent Storage that the RAM can be turned off when the device is powered off, which will make the main battery last almost indefinitely (or at least much longer) when the unit is turned off and left idle for long periods of time, such as what you do when you go overseas.

I'm not sure if that 7 mA number is for the X5 Advanced or the Basic (there will be a 2X difference, due to their being a 2X difference in their RAM sizes), but let's just use that figure to calculate how long a new, freshly charged 1440 mA-hr main battery will typically last even when the X5 is turned off:

Time for the main battery to completely discharge = 1440 / 7 = 162.86 hours, which is almost 7 days. This says that after 7 days, your main battery is dead and the backup battery kicks in to try to retain your X5's memory contents in RAM.

A typical 3V non-rechargeable Lithium coin cell used for the X5 backup battery has a battery capacity of about 220 mA-hr, which with the RAM consuming 7 mA will last another 31.4 hours, or not quite another day and a half.

Thus, in less than 9 days of sitting idle and powered off, both batteries will be dead and your X5 memory contents will be lost. You can recharge the main battery and restore your memory contents from a backup when you return from overseas, no big deal, but since the coin cell is not rechargeable you'll have to replace it EVERY time within about a day after the main battery is completely discharged.

When you go overseas, why don't you just leave with the AC power adapter/charger plugged into your X5? That way, the main battery will remain fully charged, no charge at all will be drained from your coin cell backup battery, and you won't have to restore the memory contents of your X5 every time you return.

Just food for thought....

Best regards,

Steve B

And all that is assuming that it doesn't turn itself on and do it's normal daily routine and forget to shut itself off and kill the battery the first day! better to leave it plugged in while you are gone, it was a good suggestion.

Great suggestions all. I really hate to leave things plugged in while gone as i live alone and kind of phobic about things like that. Maybe after learning all this i'll just remove both the batts and restore when i return. Not much choice is there? I'm kinda getting excited about the new VGA stuff anyway. And I here this is not a problem with the new stuff?

right, there is not a problem as long as you are talking about the x51 not the x50. the x51 uses persistant storage and won't lose its data if the battery dies.

Hmm Must be a high number. My X5 with it's used

battery easily lasts over 10 days with greater than 50% on the rechargeable. I do make sure that I remove any CF or SD card. Anyone else with a similar battery life?

After reading everyones responses and sugestions I realise my only option is to keep replacing it or to remove it if it will be left unattended for extended periods. At least I know where I stand now. Thanks everyone for the straight dope!
