Exclamation "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully" error with ActiveSync 4

I have a DELL AXIM X5 which has worked perfectly with Microsoft ActiveSync 3.x for a few years. I recently installed ActiveSync 4.1 and my connection fails to work.
[ACTIVESYNC DOWNLOAD SITE : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4c254e3f-79d5-4012-8793-d2d180a42dfa&DisplayLang=en]

I get this error:
__________________________________________________ __________
Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer.
__________________________________________________ __________

I have tried working through some of the suggestions which are applicable. [see the Readme which can be downloaded using the link above]
I have tried disabling the firewall [zone alarm] when making a connection -doesnt make any difference. I have uninstalled 4 and reinstalled the previous version and it doesnt make any difference.

I understand that ActiveSync 4.x has some TCP/IP changes but I am not sure where I would change these.

I am using Windows XP with SP2
I am not using a USB hub

I dont know what else to try - please help?

I just updated to 3.8 and didn't go to 4.1 because of the following quote from the Activesync download site:

Faster file transfer speed and photo sync via Outlook are only available for Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices. For customers using Windows Mobile 2003 or 2002-based devices, please continue using ActiveSync 3.8.

The site lists the following as supported:

The following mobile device operating systems are supported by ActiveSync 4.1:
• Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 5.0
• Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 5.0
• Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 2003 Second Edition
• Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 2003
• Microsoft® Pocket PC 2002, Microsoft® Windows® CE OS version 3.0
• Microsoft® Smartphone 2002, Microsoft® Windows® CE OS version 3.0

I am running Microsoft Pocket PC, Version 4.20.1081 , 1996-2003 Microsoft Corporation

Which according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de.../devmobfaq.asp is the same as Windows Mobile 2003 - which is supported for ActiveSync 4.1

I am not interested in faster syncing or photo syncing with Outlook and ActiveSync 4.1.

One thing that I found in order to pinpoint the problem was to uncheck all sync options (in active sync window - tools, options). And then one by one add the calendar then sync. Add the contacts then sync, etc. There could be a conflict with one of the options. Mine was with favorites. I know how frustrating it is to not be able to sync, especially when in a hurry.
