New Axim X5 in Jakarta

History:

Finally got my Advanced Axim X5 wednesday night last week, after waiting for more than 3 months, and still no one sell Axim here in Jakarta till today. Luckily, my friends go to chicago two weeks ago, and when I checked at dell.com I've got a good deal for the advance Axim, it's only 295 $! hehehe and they also offer 15% off for the peripherals. So, I bought the Axim along with Trumobile Bluetooth 300 CF card for less than 60 $, Sandisk SD Memory 256 Meg also for less than 60 $, Rhinoskin Aluminum case for less than 30$, and Belkin 3 in 1 travel charger also for less than 30 $. Total 473 $ charged to my VISA. I bought it through dell.com and let them ship it to my friend's place at chicago.

FYI the cheapest Bluetooth CF card here in Jakarta is cost more than 90 $, and Sandisk SD Memory card 256 MB is more than 100 $. No one sell Rhinoskin here. So, I think I've got a pretty good deal... :P

Have been playing arround with the new toy since it was arrived and for the whole weekend. :P

Battery & Belkin 3 in 1 travel charger:

When I received the Axim wednesday night, I ignored the caution that it should be charged for 4 hours. I just can't wait to play with it.
Yesterday I tested the battery for the whole day, it only last from 8am to 5 pm :(. Last night I removed the empty battery from the Axim and charged it separately on the cradle for the whole night, and will do the same testing today. Let's see whether any improvement today.

Found some issues with the belkin charger, whenever the battery is very low and I plug the cable to car lighter or my laptop USB port, it won't charge. However if the cable plugged into the wall power adapter, it's charging. I guess maybe there was not enough power to charge the empty battery from the laptop USB port and car cigarette lighter port.

Rhinoskin:

The rhinoskin aluminum case is gorgeus... I like it so much.. my friends(actually girls :P) adore it hehehehe
The case is provenly scrath proof. It fits perfectly with the Axim. Very nice silver color. However I wish the door can be bent to the back side.

Trumobile Bluetooth:

Since I first install it, found to major issues. However need sometime to learn how to use it with my Ericsson T39m cell phone. Thanks to the tutorial from aximsite, it's very helpfull.
I've been able to dial my phone from the PDA, send and receive SMS (however still figuring out how to get the delivery report), sync the phonebook. Currently I use mPhone to do these activities. Is there any free application that can do similar functions as mphone? I felt that mPhone is a bit slow.
Currently the mPhone was uninstalled.

Now, I also able to access the POP3 server and send receive email from Inbox through GPRS network. :P Also can access the internet using pocket IE and sync the AvantGo content.

The AXIM:
Have done the A03 ROM upgrade, install and remove many apps, do hard reset 1 time, soft reset many times. Luckily, I do backup before upgrading the ROM, and the Axim still 'fresh'. Finally I learned that backup is important. So after I do hard reset, I retored the fresh backup. Then I install the basic apps like: pocket informant, Resco picture viewer, macromedia flash player 6, configure the settings, then I do backup and save it on different file called basic backup. Now I'm free to do experiments with my Axim. :P

Input method:

The transriber is super. I've customize the character recognition by removing the pattern that I've never used to write a character. The result: SUPER! Very accurate and fastest input method. Faster than typing on PC keyboard. However currently I still find out how to effectively do Ctrl-C (copy) and Ctrl-V (paste) using transcriber.

The following apps currently installed on my Axim:

* I guest that Pocket Informant is the best PIM replacement. Have been use it to mark my calendars, events, record birthdays, manage contacts, write down tasks and notes. I really like the customization features, grouping into categories, view options, etc. Good bye all messy paper and post-it. I have a real personal digital assistant now. hehehe
Still on trial mode now but I think I'll buy it. :P

* For the taskbar manager, I use Ictinus ICBAR beta v1.0.4. It was cool but I think still have some things to improve, like connection icon does not reflect the original connection icon, when the theme switcher change the theme automatically, the taskbar collor was not changed. Other than that, it was great and free.

* PDACorps Password Manager - Really what i need to store all the passwords to the server I currently manage, an also to store PIN and bank accounts info. It's better than the regular notes.
And, it was free.

* Windows theme switch today. Downloaded free from MS website as part of the new theme generator installation V2. Sufficient enough for me to rotate the themes downloaded freely from pocketthemes.com

* Macromedia Flash Player - Haven't use it much, but I think it will be usefull soon.

* OliveTree Bible Reader - No need to bring that bulky bible again to the church. :P Now I'm the fastest verse seeker in the church hehehe. It's free!

* RESCO Picture Viewer - Very good viewer, esspecially when it's free :P. Have been used it to view pictures stored on my SD card or my friend's memory card used with the digital camera.

That's my little story with my Axim, here in Jakarta. Thanks for reading, hope that you got some info from my story.

Done with the battery testing. As I said in above thread, I charged battery separately from the Axim using the cradle over the night (more than 5 hours).

Yesterday, I started using it at 8am. I use it often the whole day, turn on the bluetooth, I also overclocked it to 498 Mhz in the afternoon.

At 9pm the battery still last 19%.. so I think it works! :P

Not bad at all. But try not to deplete your batt too much. You want to prolong your lithium battery but keeping it charged as much as possible.

But what you have done to your axim, I'm impressed by how much of a batt life you got out of it.

Yes that is great xpice, and i agree with ceej on that, try not to let the battery go under 40% to get more "mileage" on the li ion.

I've also heard that Li-Ion batteries are better not fully discharged, just like my Ericsoon T39m cell phone's battery, thanks for the suggestion guys.

Today I've been using the Axim for 4 hours without bluetooth turned on, but overclocked to 498, the battery still last 88%.

I'm going to charge it now. :P
