I successfully reverted my X5 from PPC2003 to PPC2002

Hi all,

I've spend quite a bit of time trying to revert my X5 from PPC2003 back to PPC2002 that it was originally shipped with. I pieced together a procedure from some threads here on Aximsite as well as Google and of course no whatsoever from Dell

I had no saved ROM from my PPC2003 upgrade, but this procedure did work for my X5 advanced 400MHz; this worked for me but use it at your own peril, :exc: I accept no responsibility for unusable kit :exc:

1) Download the 'Dell Axim X5 ROM Update for Pocket PC 2002, v05200300EN, A02' (R63937.EXE) from the Dell support website at http://support.euro.dell.com/support...1&fileid=82832

2) Run R63937.EXE to extract the files.

3) Copy the extracted file P25_NK_H_05200300EN.IMG into the root directory of a Compact Flash (CF) card.

4) Ensure the battery of your X5 is fully charged.

5) Insert the Compact Flash card into your X5.

6) Now, this is the hardest bit, the Dell boot loader needs to be started with the following key sequence (a) press and hold Contacts (b) keep Contacts pressed and now push in the Scroll Dial until it clicks (and hold it there) (c) press and release the Reset button - keep Contacts and the Scroll Dial pressed (d) hold Contacts and the Scroll Dial for 10 seconds and the boot loader will start. The boot loader has a white background and tells you what it is doing - detecting the ROM on the CF, verifying, erasing the X5 ROM, copying in the new ROM and then restarts the X5 with PPC2002 when it is done, Yippee! :approve:

That's it - worked for me, hope it helps you guys.

Best Regards and a Happy 2006,

Quincy

Why?

I'm a newbie to the hardcore Axim stuff so I was wondering WHY you wanted to revert your A5 back to PPC2002? My wife inherrited an X5 and we are trying to find the files to upgrade it to PPC2003.

Is there an advantage to using 2002 instead of 2003 that I don't know about?

Thanks!

My question exactly, "WHY". WM2003SE is the most stable mobile platform I have ever used and I had it on various Toshiba and Dell units.

Correction, not WM2003SE but just plain WM2003. X5's never got WM2003SE. I personally have '03 and wouldn't want to go back.

I too upgraded from PPC2002 to PPC2003 when Dell offered the upgrade CD, but then my GPS receiver didn't work.

No updated driver is going to ever be made available for PPC2003 so the manufacturer says, so I had no choice other than to revert.

Then , like many other threads here, I spent ages trying to work out how to revert...but i managed it :)

No other reason...

Thanks for that. I've been meaning to revert to WM2002 for a while - my backup from the WM2003 'upgrade' didn't work (typical) - so I'll give your method a go.

For those wondering what's wrong with WM2003 just do a search on this site for WM2003 + problem, or something like that, and read on.

Magic 8 ball says: Outlook not so good.
If the rom upgrade is freezing for an hour, you made a brick. The hack mentioned in this thread may be your only hope at re-ignition of your extinguished X5.
