Well, I got my replacement Axim X5 today and it got here in RECORD time. I called them on Monday, next day! I nearly passed out when Purolator showed up today...
But that brings me to another problem. I got a replacement unit for:
- Microphone
- Nav Pad (I got one of the early units, and the pad slopes downward far too much)
Now... the biggest problem, neither of these are fixed on the new unit. IN fact, other than the DPad not sloping down as much, it's WORSE than my initial unit.
I plan on calling them back and having them ship me out yet another unit (this time with a new Backup Battery) but am I just expecting too much? Should I *not* be able to record on the mic without static?
And I am the only one who wishes this little thing had an automatic light-detection feature like the iPaq 38xx+ series? That was *so* cool.
But no matter - STILL love my Axim!!!! :D

Seems like a handful of ppl are having problems with DPad. Mine has been fine. Then again I really hardly use it for games. But for everyday use like scrolling it seems to be working fine. Microphone again, no problems, could be better, but I've had Casios, Ipaqs and @migos and their microphones aren't any better.
Again, these are minor imperfections to me considered what I paid for the Axim, other then those issues that I've heard only, the Axim is a solid performer and a solid pocketpc. No complaints here.

MiniM3,
Can you go into your settings :: input :: options and tell us what you have for a recording level setting? I know the default recording level sounds like crap - you can set it higher and it sounds much better.

Level? u mean recording format don't you?
if so, mine is set at 8,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Mono (16 KB/s)
I just tested recording again, sounds fine to me, it's not THX sound quality but for everyday use, it will suffice.

Well - I'm on hold with Dell Canada support right now, and I've had to call back twice, while being on hold for about 10 minutes, so it's not TOO bad, nothing I'll complain about...
But I've done some more testing with the mic and with the Directional Pad on both units, and they both leave a lot to be desired. Maybe I was just spoiled by the iPaq pad, but this one just doesn't really seem to fit properly.
I don't play games all that often on the Axim, so that's not where the D-Pad is coming into being an issue, it's just general usage - and even then it can be a pain, so I want to make sure it's in 100% perfect condition.
The microphone is, even at the lowest setting and after fiddling with the gain control, still crap. I get a massive amount of static on all my recordings, and this is after two units.
But I won't give up. I still love the Axim, and think it's well worth the trouble for the price I'll have paid in the end - but just remember, everyone - If you have a problem with ANYTHING, call Dell. Get a replacement and make sure that EVERYTHING is EXACTLY like you want it, it's your right, and is one of the benefits of being a Dell customer :)

Yikes - Okay, an hour later. Oy. Still on hold, and have been swapped back from Tech Support to Customer Care (who have the LONGEST hold times of anything I've ever seen!)
But I'm banging my head, because I get flipped back and forth because neither side knows exactly what's happening, and I refuse to ship back my original unit without having a perfectly working unit in my hand.
ANd now that all is said and done, it looks like I'm going to have to wait two days for my new unit's Service Tag to be entered into the system, then I'll have to contact Dell again and have the tech support people ship me out ANOTHER replacement unit.
But at least I don't have to live WITHOUT a unit, that's something pretty awesome :)
