Mad Soft reset turned into hard reset!!!

I was listening to my mp3s using wifi when the program (Pocket MVP) froze. I tried a soft reset (which always worked before) but ended up with a hard reset!!!

So now I have a few questions:

1. Is there a systematic way of restoring/backing up? That is, which programs should be installed first? I cannot use Activesync's restore function since more current data (not saved during last backup) would be lost.

2. If I want to install the new ROM upgrade, do I have to install 02 before 03?

Any other tips would be really appeciated as well!

Thanks,

Gigi

Are you sure you weren't accidentally(sp?) holding the power button?

Of course that's always a possibility, but I don't think so since whenever you perform a hard reset, the Ax asks you to confirm it by pressing one of the buttons.

No, you don't have to install 02 before 03!

I had the same prob ones. I did a soft reset and the set up your pocket pc screen appeard!!! without asking or anything!

You could try sprite pocket back-up for systematic backups.

hope this helps,

Wannahave

Soft resets turning into hard resets happen to me all the time. It usually happens after the Axim starts to get flakier and stranger --the digitizer gets way out of alignment and the ppc starts to have short periods of freezing, but usually comes out of them. Then finally it locks up tight, I hit the soft reset button and *bang*, hard reset. Then I restore from my SD card and everything is fine for a few more days.

This was posted from my Axim.

Do you have any wierd software running to cause that?
It sure isn't normal ... judging my mine which is rock solid.

I do a soft reset every time I want to use the gps software because I often get a memory is low warning if I just stick it in there and fire it up. Could you do some good by reseting more often ... rather than waiting til it gets critical?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Well this whole thing sure is annoying...but I am obviously not the only one this has happened to!

io333, will restoring from SD make me lose my most current data? And wannahave, is pocket-back up only good BEFORE I've lost everything?

Mike C, I don't think I have any weird software on it...just stuff I've read about from this site mainly. But I have noticed that my Ax freezes A LOT when using Pocket MVP!!! And about resetting more often, it's funny that you mention that, because I have already thought I've been having to reset a whole lot more than I should. But then perhaps I am comparing the situation to my desktop...

I hardly ever get a real freeze-up, and just soft-reset to flush the memory. What I was getting at was the possibility that your program memory might be low, causing some of the trouble.

If you're playing mpg's, try pocket tv instead.

I see your point Mike. I will try Pocket tv this time instead.

Thanks,

My Axim did the same thing some time ago. Hard reset instead of soft one without any warning.:rolling:

I'm pretty sure it's some bit of software or combination of bits that's doing it. My first clue is when ActiveSync dies. Then it's time for a complete reinstall from scratch, or just living with the lack of ActiveSynch, which I manage to do pretty well. But after death of AS, it's all downhill from there.

The apps I use most often are ftxpbrowser, the ambicom wifi driver, npop, calendar+, gsplayer and pocketmusic.

If I had to bet on it, I'd put all my money on AS being the root of the softreset>>hard reset problem.
