My new axim (400mhz) arrived yesterday!!! Few concerns tho....

ok. im new here, i just got my axim delivered yesterday but ive run into a few probems.
For one, DELL didn't ship the 64MB SD card that was suppppposed to come with the axim. But i gave them a ring today and they said they would have it sent out to me.

secondly I just cant get Microsoft active sync to recognise the Axim. when i click "get connected" it justs says searching and it looks at the USB and COM ports but doesnt find anythingeventhough its plugged into the USB (which works because i use it for my printer). But sometimes i CAN connect connect the PC and the Axim from the Axim just by pressing the power button. although it never works when i click "sync" from active sync in the axim. Im left clueless about whats wrong because sometimes it does connect, by itself from the axim, but when i try to make it connect it never works. Any help?

Also Im a bit suspicious of DELL sending me a refurbished model instead of a brand new one because when i go to start>settings>memory>storage card it says i have 22MB availble evnthought i have no SD or Compact flash card in it. If this is available i cant seem to access it from the File Browser. This made me think whether it was someone else's axim who left this setting in it from when he had a storage card. Is there anyway i can confirm whether or not this is a refurb?

On the invoice it says 48MB ROM and 64MB RAM (SD card). well they are sending me the SD CARD because they didnt include it originally but when i got to start>settings>memory>main memory then it says 64MB available instead of 48 (it should be 48 right?) I woudlnt complain if i had extra ROm, but i find this a bit hard to belive.

I guess thats it for now. shame because i havent really had a chance to play with it because of these problems.

Thanks and forgive me if i dont make sense in somplaces because i wrote this without thinking it out much.

PS the axim cradle is so sexy.

Where to start. Lets start with the memory first. The 22 MB is the left over ROM that you can access after the Pocket PC operating system has used some of it. Your Axim isn't refurbished, all 400 Mhz have 22 MB of what is called Built in Storage, and you can check how much is left by going to the storage card section. Second, you have 64 MB of RAM, which is used for running programs, as well as storing them. So it should be 64 MB, but you can't use all that for storage space because it also needs to be used for running the programs.

As for Activesync, did you install the drivers for Activesync from the software CD? Also, what version of Windows are you running? I had some problems getting my Toshiba E310 to run on Windows 98. I had to download a special driver specifically for 98.

Welcome to the club. Enjoy your new machine.

Can't help with the sync. Ever since I upgraded to the new Active Sync version, I get a "cannot connect" message about half the time. Annoying. I'm thinking of going back to the old version.

As far as the "extra" memory, it ain't a bug, it's a feature!!

The 400 version comes with 64MB of storage for your use. If you lose power, whatever is stored in this memory is lost. To see how much of the 64MB (actually 63.54MB) is available, go to Start, Settings, System tab, Memory and it will be broken down between Storage and Program.

The 400 also has 48MB of flash memory which contains the operating system. Lose power and it still retains this data. Because the OS doesn't use all 48MB of flash memory, you get about 22MB (OK, 21.24MB) to play with and store files! This shows up as "Built-in Storage".

When you add the SD card, you'll see "SD Card" listed.

When you load a program, answer "no" to the "load program to default directory?" question and you'll get a list of all the places you can load your programs (Built-in, SD Card, etc.).

I hope that clears it up a little.

And yes, the cradle rocks!

I came across this sync problem recently and it would connect and sync with my laptop (a Compaq from work) if I used the USB port on the back, but had the same problems as you when using the USB port on the docking station at work.

The answer (from Compaq) was to have the latest docking station drivers and the newest ROM upgrade (for the laptop).

I couldn't do the upgrade - not allowed (needs password)

I then tried a different type of docking station and this (so far) is working OK.

As I've been researching this it definitely seems to be a recurring USB related issue.

You could try updating the Dell WinCE USB driver on the PC with the one on the Axim disk, or updating your PC USB drivers
