PocketMidi

Anyone had any luck using PocketMIDI on their AXIM. The player seems to function okay but no sound??? Any help would be appreciated.

That common problem is caused by either (A) not having installed an instrument set, or (B) an incorrectly configured .cfg file.

Where (what directory?) on your Axim did you install the PocketMIDI program?

Which and Where did you install the instrument set?

Does the location of the instrument set match with the appropriate entry in the timidity.cfg?

NOTE: If you put the instrument set on a storage card, you have to indicate that in the timidity.cfg as "Storage_Card" (quotes omitted, note the underscore). When interpreting directory names and files names, PocketMIDI converts underscores to space characters.

Thanks for the response. I put the cab file in my documents on the pocket pc and then click on it using file explorer. A folder is created in My Device called timidity. Inside is a file called PocketMIDI and timidity. I then tried putting all the sound set in this folder but without success. I am obviously doing something wrong here but I am a newcomer to pocket pc!!

I did encountered that same problem too. No sound ever came out of my axim but the file was playing fine. So I gave up on it. I'll try to install it again and make use of the suggestions of sracer (thanks man!). In the meantime, you can also try using Mimidi for Pocket PC. Just search for it at Google. It installed nicely and played my midi files well (oh, just set the sound output to 44Khz). By the way, it has a peculiar feature of placing the taskbar at the bottom of te screen wile playing (what I'm saying is that it's part of the program).Hope this helps!

MiMIDI is a decent app and I used it on my BE-300 for quite a while. But PocketMIDI has a much higher quality playback, IMO. It is indeed a bit tricky to set up, but once it is... oh sweetness. :)

Here's my setup, hopefully some insight can be gleaned from it...

I have the instrument set installed on my SD card:

\Storage Card\timidity\

I have the PocketMIDI program installed in RAM:
\timidity\

My config file \timidity\timidity.cfg contains the following values (along with a lot of other commented lines, etc.)

In the section "# If you've moved things around since...." I have these lines:

dir \timidity
playlist \My_Documents\songs.txt

In the section that starts out:
"# This sets up the default patches in ....."
I have:

dir \Storage_Card\timidity\
source \Storage_Card\timidity\default.cfg

I hope this helps.

I'm lost here. How do you edit timidity.cfg? Is is a text file that you can edit with a text editor? Thanks!

Yes, timidity.cfg is a plain text file... you can edit it with notepad.
