new to Axim... want to upgrade from A00 to A04

Hi All, im a newbee to the site, and to the axim x5. I just purchased my axim x5-400 (got it for $90 YAYYY!!!), and found out that it still has A00 ROM. I did a bit of research and found out that i can upgrade to A04 (still have WM2002).

My question is.. How do i do the upgrade...lol. I've read a few of the posts here, but they looked quiet dated. Therefore Im asking to start a new thread on upgrading my ROM.

DO I need to upgrade from A00 to A02, then A03, to A04?
Sorry, im also new to this whole upgrading ROM thing...

What are the possible downfalls that I need to look into before the upgrade?, I DO no need to backup anything, cause there is really nothin in it right now.

Also, does pocket word and excell still say in there?

THe previous owner did have a pocket dictionary and some other programs that he have installed in it. HOw do i go about still keeping them?

Please help me out... I'd greatley appriciate it.
and thank you in advance

Welcome - come inside and enjoy the party!!!

To upgrade go to Dells support pages - you can get the upgrade files from there - you don't have to go through 01,02 etc just go straight to the latest ROM
Pocket word and Excel stay there - they are part of the OS
As to the previous owners programs - unless he gave you the installation files - count them as lost.

PS its very unlikely you will be able to upgrade to WM2003 legally - and we dont provide information to do illegal activities here

Welcome to Aximsite!

It would be a good idea to upgrade rom first thing as your Ax will hard reset.

One other thing,.. Lets say that I mess up the "hard reset" (im assuming that means to upgrade the os... or reinstall it).. can I redo the rom install.

Like, lets say My intall went bad, and my device does not boot, can i do another ROM upgrade? or Will i then have to purchase a dell X5 upgrade CD to 2003 from Ebay to make this work?...

Can I just say a few things here

Do a hard reset - clears all the rubbish placed on your device by previous owner. not the same as OS upgrade - consider it like the system install disks some companies provide with computers.

Use it for a while - Are you having problems with it? If so maybe do the ROM upgrade.

If its working fine then why go through the hassles of upgrading (which might leave you with a nice paperweight) when you wont gain anything.

Rom upgrade will not speed up the CF

Playing movie files - use the search engine on this site and look for Betaplayer

OK you need to first off download the usermanual and read it - It will tell you how to do the hard reset and will help you with what the buttons do.

Read the manual before you even consider doing anything major to your X5

OK Hardware tutorials are here and how to hard reset is here

Use this download link here to download TCPMP version 0.71 for Windows Mobile.
Unzip the file, read the readme.txt. Your Ax is an XScale device (XScale is an ARM device) so you use tcpmp.arm_ce3.cab. Move this file on to your Axim (via memory card or ActiveSync). You can then install by running the .cab file using File Explorer or CabInstl.
