One thing I learned is that when you hold the four button combo to trip the ROM replacement process, hold all four (POWER + RESET + SCROLL + CONTACTS) and release POWER and RESET after only 2 seconds (so as to prevent it going into a hard reset), while continuing to hold the other two. Good luck!
That is not a legal way to install it, sorry but all you are doing is using a rom you got for free and tricking your X5 into installing it. You never purchased the license that is required to make it legal.

Its like downloading a DVD of Office from a website and installing it, your copy is still not legal even though it works as you did not purchase the license.

That thread you linked is easy enough to find searching google as well for those that are up in arms that I removed it....I will let you be creative on your time with it though, we do not need to condone illegal issues here.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_mobile), you are running Windows CE 4.20 and hence WM 2003. Makes sense to me, since my x30 has WM 2003SE and is using Windows CE 4.21.

(Sort of odd that the "About" screen on your x5 doesn't list WM 2003 since it lists WM 2003SE right above the version number on my x30... though I suppose MS just corrected that in hindsight. )

ebay seems to only be selling hacked or illegal versions

All of those i assume are illegal downloads or CD's. I am trying to do this legally if possible

I would try to find the original Dell upgrade, I don't like the ones where you download it

My Question is........
Why has Dell abandoned their customers and basically forced X5 users to go underground for updates? Not very good PR in my book! To me, the company also has a duty to support a viable platform until it is totally useless. It amounts to them (Dell) not being able to make $5 million a year on the X5 so they decide to kick the old customers to the curb. (by the way, I got the upgrade off Ebay and proud of it! If Dell won't provide I'll get it anyway I can. Would gladly pay Dell if they offered it.)

I bought the wm 2003 upgrade from ebay for 3 bucks yesterday. on the page he states its "in the public domain" and that he has a license to sell them. while that might be a lie and its illegal, hes been selling the upgrade for a while and since ebays fairly strict about illegal stuff (and all microsoft or dell has to do is tell them to stop) the fact that its still setting may mean its legal after all.

it sure works well, a few mouse clicks and it backs your existing rom up and install the new A05 WM 2003 upgrade. took about 1/2 hour.
