Over the past few weeks and months there has been a fair amount of talk of the WM2003 upgrade for the X5.
-Brief History:
This upgrade was for the people that bought a Dell X5 Adv. or Basic with Pocket PC 2002 and wanted to upgrade to WM2003.
For a short while, the upgrade was sold on Dell's site and was delivered via a CD. There never was an OFFICIAL LEGAL way to install WM2003 on your X5 via the internet.
Just like other software, WM2003 is an OS and is licensed to the person. There is no activation key per say, but there is a license and each person that bought the software was given a licence to use WM2003 on their X5. It is illegal if you copy the disk/download the update from somewhere and this is piracy.
What complicates this is that Dell stopped selling the upgrade disk just a short while after they began selling it. This means that many people now are not able to buy the disk directly from Dell and it is hard to find in many cases.
This has lead a lot of people to look for other (maybe not so legal) ways of upgrading.
Another thing that complicated the whole subject is that the Rom Update (the free "patches" for your OS) for WM2003 on the X5 could also be used to upgrade your X5 from PPC2002 to WM2003 via a special method. This is what has been linked to and doing this IS ILLEGAL. You also can easily brick (ruin and make your X5 not work) your X5 via this method, plus it is a hack and thus not totally reliable.
-What this means here and now:
The Aximsite Rules clearly state "No Links or Discussion about WAREZ, SEX, RACIAL, or any otherwise offensive or illegal topics.". We will remove any links to the illegal distribution of the X5 WM2003 update and illegal methods for updated via the Rom hack.
-So what if you really do need the update?:
First off, check eBay. Many times the upgrade CD will popup on eBay once and awhile. (some of the auctions are just selling the hacked method though, so watch out)
-Final Sum up:
Overall we do not want the talk/distribution of illegal software and hacks here on Aximsite. So please do not link/post illegal ways of upgrading, or come here and complain that your device is messed up because you illegally tried to hack the upgrade onto your device or something to that effect. Also remember that the WM2003 upgrade is not NECESSARY to use the X5, it is just an upgrade from the PPC2002 version and has a few minor changes. Your X5 is still totally usable with PPC2002 on it.
Dell is Dell...who knows except the shockey monkey! Before I sold my X5 Advanced, I got the upgrade on eBay and loved it. Best wishes in your searches.

This is all very well, but we appear to now be entering the stage where 2003 becomes more essential than desirable.
FOr instance, I tried to upgrade my copy of Pocket Informant last week to the new 2007 version. When it wouldn't work I investigated further and found that the new version required WM2003 at least. Some of the new functionality required too much programming to make it work on WM2002 (Their words, not mine).
It seems to me that this is liklely to be the beginning of a trend whereby those of us still running WM2002 on our X5s are going to be left behind to run only old software unless some way is found to lrgally upgrade the OS.

I think it should be free. The same thing with windows 95, 98, me. But then you would have hosting issuses, but if sites already do it illegally, im sure some would do it legally.
My theory, is when the manufacturer stops support for a product, or it gets old, its free.
IE: Resco Explorer's older versions that once costed money, would then be free, Windows 95, 98, me would become free...

I just upgraded the ROM on my 300Mhz X5 from A00 straight to A05, LEGITIMATELY. :approve: This AximUsers thread (LINK REMOVE) proved very helpful. The crucial info and helpful links are on the first page of the thread. One thing I learned is that when you hold the four button combo to trip the ROM replacement process, hold all four (POWER + RESET + SCROLL + CONTACTS) and release POWER and RESET after only 2 seconds (so as to prevent it going into a hard reset), while continuing to hold the other two. Good luck!
EDIT (GRENTZ): That is not a legal way to install it, sorry but all you are doing is using a rom you got for free and tricking your X5 into installing it. You never purchased the license that is required to make it legal.
jee whiz, who is talking about illegal, do not assume.. i stated that I bought the cd with wm 2003. I have a brand new shrink wrapped cd from dell with product key and it is ppc 2003 for my x 5. I bought it in the period that Dell was selling it. All I want to know, since I never installed in on my axim x5 original bought from Dell, is whether i should or should not... I have rom a00 as stated and i heard on some forum that one can not jump to a05 which comes with my Dell purchased cd because of some issue. jee whiz, all this illegal talk is somewhat disconcerting when I did everything by the book and bought everything and acc. from Dell and I have receipts and product keys, why assume everyone is bad!! sorry I asked, now, Joe

Chill, Joecallahan, and just install it. You got it legit, we can see that. It's a good idea, as far as I can tell, to install WM2003 on the X5, it seems to work pretty well on that model. Anybody who cares to argue, do so now.
Grentz's warning in the first post in this thread is only to remind people that asking/telling people how to illegally upgrade their X5 is frowned upon, and not allowed in these forums.
The warning does not apply to you, since you have a perfectly legitimate copy of WM2003!
