D-Pad mod - Part 1

i say part one, cause in a rush to squeze some mp3's on my cf card this morning, i formatted it not thinking i still had images on it to copy to the system...doh.....so here is a pic and vid of the system in its re-assembled state....it simply does not show how much more improved the dpad is....its easily as good as any other pda out there that ive used, and im supprised why it wasent made this way from the start.

first, notice how the dpad is slighty higher than stock...ide say the mod raised it about 1 mm, though i could of easyly kept it at stock height or lower...but the slight raise makes it easier to use.

I try to show how solid and responsive it is here...just keep in mind how wobbly the stock dpad is when you try using it from the edge...

here is the 30 second video.... you'l need divx to play (encoded with 5.05)

part two will come if i get the energy to take it apart again and take pics of what i have done.

Just a word of caution...

You will void your warranty if you do this so make sure you are comfortable with that...

I guess it might be better to wait the year (or longer depending on how long of warranty you purchased) before one tries the enhancement...If there are pics to be had I will certainly save them and try it...

in a nutshell, i krazy glued the dpad button to a rubber washer, which is then glued to the button on the pcb...the top flat part of the joystick on the pcb actually comes off to reveal a square shart, so even though its a direct connection, i can still take it apart as the dpad just presses onto the main nav button....the rubber is there to give it a bit of flex incase you accidently pressed to hard - which might rip the switch right off the pcb without the rubber....its actually alot more work than that as it required some material removal from both the dpad and the nav button on the pcb...not to mention several attempts at glueing it to get it lined up, and 5-6 disasemblys/reassemblys in the process....

but rest assured, the dpad is now quite awesome compared to the flimsey excuse for one that it was stock....

Nice work coolhand. I wish you hadn't deleted the pics, as I am interested in this mod myself. :)

Aww, I want to see your mod! I can't see the video at work with our firewall. Actually, I'm surprised that I can see mobilitysite through the firewall. My company is actually using the firewall that China threw out for the Olympics; it was too restrictive for an authoritarian communist country, but somehow just right for this Corporation.
