Question Replace my Toshiba E740 with a Axim X5 400Mhz??

Hi all,

I've been reading the posts around this board and I'm in a pickle

I just got a Toshiba e740 a few days ago and I'm thinking about selling this and buying a new Axim X5 with the 400mhz.

The e740 has its problems. The mic is a little funny when recording (sounds like you keep covering it up and then uncovering it very fast) and also the battery life is crap. People say it's slow and I would agree. Also the button thing with the e740 and games aint good

So I was thinking about buying the Axim X5 - Would this be a good idea?

What's the recording like? And games? How long does it last without turning it off with normal use?

Many thanks people - you are a great help :D

I wouldn't call the Axim buttons "good" for games but it gets me by. Otherwise it is a great product. The recording is excellent if you set the quality high enough. I get excellent battery life (usuallt reduced because I am usually connected to wifi, but still good).

I've seen the Toshibas and the screens are just sad... the Axim's screen is a lot better. The recording seems to be fine for me. The navigation button is a total waste, though... but I'm willing to take a useless button for the price I paid.

I've never run the battery down very far, but judging by how much it drops with what I do, I'm guessing it would last 15-20 hours if you didn't do anything very processor-intensive. I might be wrong about that, though.

dont buy the axim for a better button...cause its realy not unless you mod it...

buy the axim for the battery life etc....recording seems fine on my unit - no that i use it much, but i picked up vito sound explorer and mapped it to the record button - and set the recording quality a bit higher than default...works great.

its hard to say how long the battery life is cause everyone uses it differently, but if its not enough, you can allways pick up the monster of a high-cap battery dell has....

even with the stock battery, it will play mp3's all day long and longer if you turn the screen off...and ive had no probs watching two hours of video, half hour of gaming, and listening to mp3's for a few hours....

Compared to my old Toshiba E310, which has the same button layout for gaming, the Axim is a dream come true! As for the battery life, I use mine with full brightness, and have never gotten below 40%, even after 4 hours of continuous use. But even so, I got a spare battery from www.compgeeks.com for $27!

Well, the Extra-battery is almost the size of 2 batteries, with the juice of about 3.

For most people, one would be enough, and a second, regular one, would be a much betetr option than the extra-power one.

The backlight and screen, when I compared mine to a toshiba unit in the store, was also a lot brighter, and more vivid, although apart from that I know little about the toshiba units.

As for size, the Axim is slightly bigger, but comaring them side-by-side, I like the like the form factor of the axim better, since it has the grips on the side, and it tapers down, it's more comfortable to hold and use. The price point, especialyl with some sort of added coupon, is also nice (and if the price goes down within a month, you can call in and get a rebate, it goes up and down often but usually only by a small amount. (~20)

I cannot complain about the recording. I don't use it for anything too important, but it works all right. My buttons are not the greatest thing but they work fine for me. sometimes it's just a bit sensitive so I try to be extra careful when it is but other times, they work just fine for me.
My normal use out of it can last anywhere from 6 hrs to 10hrs. I sometimes have the backlight on but most of the time it is off and most of the time I have it set on 200MHZ. The only time I need 400MHZ (498MHz if you over clock it) is when I watch a movie on it.
But when I compare the lighting of the Axim with the e740, I like the Axim's better. I know some people like the lighting of the toshiba but that is their preference.
I'm a happy Aximite and I don't want to give it up. that is until a new one comes out after a couple of years. ;)
