I stumbled upon this site by accident, and from a quick overview I know this is the place I've been looking for! I buddy handed me a used Axim X5 a few days ago. The battery seems to be dead and that's all he was able to tell me.
With a wifi card, does this unit pick up wireless internet signals in different areas I travel, or do I have to manually tell it what to look for? What is a recommended wifi card to use?
How do I set up bluetooth? Is there a card for that?
I found a car charger/adaptor for something else that fits and powers the unit while it's plugged in, but this charger wasn't made for the X5. I left it plugged in and but the unit off to see if it'll charge. I don't see any indicators that it's doing anything, and when I power the unit, the main and backup batteries are both at 0%. Do I need to use an approved charger or is the battery in need of replacement?
I've also tapped around with the stylus a few times, and suddenly it stops working/responding. And after a short period of time, it seems to be working fine again. Is this a setting or something?
When I cut the unit off and unplug it, when I plug it up again it resets the unit and I lose all information. How can I retain information I've stored?
Any help with these questions/issues is greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day
Sounds like a dead battery or bad connection to the battery or uncharged battery. What is the voltage and current rating on the adapter that you are using ? The x5 requires a 5volt 2.5 amp adapter to charge the battery. There are brand new dell original x5 batteries for sell on ebay for $2.00 each. It might be wise of you to pick up a few and look for the proper charger also. Once you get it working with a battery then look for a socket or ambicom or linkskys compact flash wifi card. you loose all your data because your battery is bad or uncharged.
Thanks so much. This information really helps. The car charger I was using is actually for a CD walkman, and it's only 4.5V (I don't knwo the amps). It doesn't really 'fit' so I have to hold it in place. I'll look into the proper charger and battery replacements suggested above.

A compact flash (CF) bluetooth card will do this for you. The CF card will also come with software that will install on your Axim so that you can make and manage your bluetooth connected items.
I have been using an Ambicom compact flash bluetooth adapter for about 2 yrs. In fact it is rarely out of my Axim since I use it daily to tether to my BT phone and connect to the internet. It was inexpensive and it works pretty reliably. That being said I am not a big fan of the management software. Its kind of clunky and acts a little odd sometimes. Nothing huge but nuisance stuff like refusing to establish a connection to a paired device until I do a soft reset.
The Ambicom CF card also sticks out of the CF slot about a half an inch so you have to be a little careful not to snap it off. In the past 2 yrs I have broken off the plastic housing 4 times, but it was easily fixed with super glue. Didn't effect the operation of the CF card at all ;)
Thanks so much for the advice. I'll look at the Ambicom CF cards. Is there a particular model you'd recommend? Are all wireless CF cards bluetooth enabled, or do I need to look out for this specification?

Wifi Compact Flash cards and Bluetooth Compact Flash Cards are two different things. And keep in mind there are just plain ol' compact flash memory cards too. I don't think I have ever seen a Wifi/Bluetooth compact flash combo. Shopping for them is pretty straight forward, everything is normally clearly marked.
Finally if I were shopping for a bluetooth CF card today I would be hard pressed to resist the one from Socket. More expensive than Ambicom but it hardly protrudes at all from the slot. Plenty of other choices out there too.

Would you suggest going with socket for a wifi card as well? some mentioned ambicom as a good choice, but if i could avoid the CF card sticking out of the top of the unit, that'll be great! :-) any comparisons to be made performance wise?

Don't know anything about Socket WiFi cards. I purchased an Ambicom Wifi CF card (once again, very inexpensive) about 1.5 yrs ago and I had a horrible time getting it to work reliably. Maybe they've gotten better but I won't take that chance again. There are even more choices available for wifi CF cards (Linksys, Dlink etc etc.) so you should be able to shop around. I think if you search around the forums you'll find some info/feedback on wifi cards.
Regarding your stylus problem, if you are using a screen protector (I recommend it), check and see if it is stuck under the sides or top/bottom, as it can cause the problem.
Good luck & Enjoy!

I have the ambicom wifi card for my x5 advanced running ppc2002 and I had no problems with it at all.Worked right out the package when I installed the software and it has incredible range. I can stay connected to my linkskys router at home for over a block away.

Thanks for that input. For the price and functionality, it sounds like Ambicom is leading the list right now. I also read somewhere about Symbol wifi cards. has anyone used these and/or know others who have to shed some light on their 'consumer rating.'
I have a symbol wifi card and worked straight out of box. Running ppc2003 you load the drivers before you put the card in slot. Got it off of ebay for $29.95 with free shipping about 2 months ago. Had it within 3 days after I bought it. Seller even had the link to the drivers for ppc2003. I've seen them lower but don't know the reliability of the sellers.
Consumer ratings were very good, and I researched a lot before I bought it. Do a search here and you should be able to find the discussion on the different cards.
