Memory Error - can't do even hard reset

Hello,

I'm affraid today is the day ive been slightly affraid of for the past 3 years of non-problematic using of my Dell Axim X5. So: Today i woke up as usual, took my axim (had been listening to some mp3s until i fell asleep in the evening while having my axim in the net to charge the battery - like many many times before) and went outside. While walking, i wanted to begin listening to some music again so i took my axim, turned it on, everything looked alright but it didn't respond to the taps on the screen at all. So i decided to make a soft reset and that was the last thing which looked normal. After pressing the reset button, nothing but a black screen apeared and the usual process didnt take place. So i tried the soft reset again and now there apperared the blue dell screen. That was all. The blue screen still remained and nothing else was happening. I was quite worried and hoping i wouldnt have to do a hard reset. But to make a hard reset wouldnt be nothing so bad in the end. If I only could do it! I tried to do soft reset repeatedly and after on of those attempts a new screen apeared - "Memory error, press [contacts] to fix this error and if the system doesn't boot press...to do a hard reset". Unfortunately, i cannot do the hard reset as well- after trying to do so, the blue dell screen appears again, so there's apparently no change at all. The blue screen remains there all the time and the only way to get rif of it and to turn axim off is to remove the battery.

I was browsing this forum and noticed similar problems by users of another dell axim models, but usually they were able to fix it by pressing the contacts button or some other way, some changed the backup battery or something...but nothing seems to help me. I am quite confused and worried cause this happend without any apparent reason. I installed some new software last week and that is the only thing which comes to my mind as a possible problem, although very unlikely to cause this (it was Softmaker Textmaker Beta version..)

If anyone could give me an advice or just to suggest something, I'd be very glad and thank you in advance....

Have you tried removing the main and backup batteries? This will force a hard reset.

thanks for the suggestion - i hadnt tried that. but have done it right now and there is no change - after removing both of the batteries and putting them back in place and turning the axim on, the blue screen appears again, or the screen with "the memory error..."

Leave them out for longer (i.e., a few hours). Also, try charging the device to see if it'll help.

Hm..might be time for the bootloader technique:

No guarantees, but hopefully, it will work. Good luck!

great suggestion, thanx a lot - some progress has been made, but it is still not solved. i went through the whole process with pressing the buttons etc., managed to get to the diagnostic screen, but unfortunately it crashed when it wrote "invalid rom update" or something like that. i guess its because there is no newer version of rom update for axim 300 mhz available (i tried it with the rom version i already had installed). i also tried some lower version (a02) but the result was the same. maybe i should try to install wm 2003? unfortunately it can't be found on dell's site.
anyway, if there is a way to solve my problem, this is the right direction i guess.

wwait....taking back my last post! it seems it is working!!! it didnt work in the earlier case because of my minor fault (copied two .img files on the CF card instead of just one). so now im watching a very nice screen with "Flash Erase...........running"

i hope it finishes well...so, thanks a lot gigi, youve been a great help to me and im very grateful to you :o)

EDIT 21:33 - after a nicely looking process of deleting and writing new data appeared a very well known blue screen again and for now it is everything i can see...the war has not been won yet

if anyone knows something please let me know, im already a bit desperate. i would like to try to install windows mobile 2003 although am not sure if that helps but there s no chance to download it on dell.com...i need to use my axim. i cant (dont want to) believe that it cannot be restored, that it simply died all of a sudden without any apparent reason in one second after three years of our happy and passionate marriage :o) :o(((((((

Sorry that we couldn't help...

But maybe it's just a good excuse for an upgrade! ;)

Well, don't you think it would be maybe a too complicated way? Truth is that I got the upgrade to WM2003 but unfortunately I wasn't able to try it, because, as I wrote, the PDA wasn't (and still isn't) responding to any of the buttons, I can't turn it on to see the blue screen, nothing... It may look that the purpose of this was to gain an upgrade to WM2003, I know. But first of all - I am not a liar, and I was pretty satisfied with PocketPC 2002, had been using it for 3 years so I really didn't have any reason to upgrade (simply needless), until this "death" occured and since I was trying to fix it, this seemed to me to be the last possible thing. And WM2003 is really nothing new is it? If I wanted it, I'd probably try to gain it much sooner...

Anyway, thank you for trying to help me. I hope to buy another Axim X5 second-hand, cause I need it and have the peripherals - cards and foldable keyboard. So I am not leaving Aximsite yet ;o)
