Sending back 300mhz version and ordered 400mhz version

The price difference was $100.

Now the way I see it,
another 32MB of ram
16MB of ROM
The docking cradle
and the faster processor

are definately worth the $100

When I ordered my 300 I wasn't sure if I was really going to get into pocket PC's and I didn't think the cpu would make much difference since I wasn't going to be running unreal tournament or anything.

But now I've changed my mind.

I think the 300 is a great Axim and a hell of a bargan. I mean a compactflash MP3 player is going to run you almost as much as the $173 dell is asking and the Axim does tons more and still plays MP3's.

But after running some video's, emulators, and virtual synth programs (the nail in the coffin) I've decided the 300mhz isn't enough for me.

I thought I'd share my experience for the new buyers out there.

God...I've sunk almost as much into my Axim as I did my new laptop.

Wifi Dell card (probably will return because of all the range problems I keep hearing about. haven't got it yet) $80
512 Compactflash $120
Rhinoskin case $30
Clear covers and replacement stylus $30
128MB MMC memory $60

The accesorries cost more than the Axim. :)

Yes the units are well priced and a great deal, but the 400 is the way to go. The problem as most people find out; is the cost of the toys for your new toy often exceeds the initial expense of the axim. Start adding in programs, SD, CF, cases, cables etc., etc. and that new Ax gets near the cost of a new laptop.

But hey, your worth it!

new models are supposed to come out in the fall and i doubt they're going to go "way" down. Probably another 50 off bringing it to the 260-275 range, but thats like 4-5 months till the fall season..

Only one problem: Laptops have the same problem!

Laptop (for this example) $1500
Case $100
Software (let's say, a few games, some professional software like photoshop, and some reference tools, plus an upgrade to office when buying the thing... thuogh you could carry a lot over from a computer, granted) $1000
WiFi card $80
Extra Battery of some sort, if you need a lot of life $80+
Extra chargers etc. $40
Mouse $20

Software aside you can still spend $400+ for extras on a laptop. Software IMHO is a separate deal, since it isnt really 'tied' to your system like a case, or battery. Software you can install on multiple computers, keep for years, since you buy a licence. Software can also greatly exceed hardware cost on any platform, depending on what you buy. When it gets down to it though, Hardware is just a means of running software, without it, hardware would be nothing more than an energy draining paperweight. :D

pfft... for the price of that you could get a good 3-4 MP separate camera, a 512 MB CF card, and an Axim with a little left over for extras (not to mention the extras you'd need for the Clie... you can use this extras argument for just about anything...)... hmm... decisons decisions...

Don't forget the cost of the GPS receiver and software. The 6-in-1 card reader so you can load your files faster. The games, calculator programs, calendar enhancement programs, dictionary and thesaraus, .. and, oh yea, a few more memory cards.

Yes; but boys must have their toys! At least that is what the wife says. You were on the money for the laptop, although it was $1050.00 for the new Toshiba add $250.00 for the 3 year complete care, $80.00 for a case and software another $100.00.

I still have not progressed with the Axim to flash cards and a reader or additional programs; am waiting for PPC 03 to buy any programs.

Ahh but there is a reason I single out my Axim.

All the toys for my laptop I can use in more than just the laptop.
I can use the case as a briefcase, the portable optical mouse on any USB PC, and the wifi card in my work Laptop.

But the Axim. I can only use the stylus and screen protectors on the axim, the wifi compactflash only on the axim, the rhino skin case only on the axim. But the compact flash I can use on my G2 camera, and the MMC card I can use on my Nokia 3650.

And if you buy software for a laptop it will work on your desktop as well.

As far as what you should get in terms of speed. Get whatever you can tolerate.

I don't expect the new Axim to be that much faster than the 300. But, since the PPC software was meant to run on an ARM processor, it runs slower on a Xscale anyway. So you need the 400 just to run the same programs that a Strongarm 200 could.

Of course this will change now that all the new PPC's have Xscales.

When you think about what it does for $173 it doesn't matter that for $100 more you can get a better model, because even the low end model rocks!

I just bought the 400 because of its speed and extra memory. So its all good, everyone has different tastes on which is better for them

I shudder to think how hard it'd be to try and build the computer I'm building with $100 less...

And I can't help but think that I could have gotten a Canterwood motherboard chipset and 1 GB middle-of-the-road DDR400 RAM! Though I have to draw the line there. My axim is definately worth what I paid for it.
