Programs in background closing?

I'm already back with a question. I hope someone can help me with this because it's driving me batty.

Programs that are "minimized" just disappear... rather frequently. For instance, if I have Opera open, and I "X" it (but it is, of course, still open), and then I start up something else, there's a good chance that Opera won't be there when I hit the switcher to go back. I thought perhaps it was a memory concern -- that the OS might close things as it needs -- but I don't think that's what's going on here because I have plenty of RAM available for the two programs. It also usually prompts you when it needs to close a program because it is out of memory. Hack Master does this to me, too, though it's never really "in the background." Its little meters will just disappear from my taskbar for no reason.

I also thought it could be instability due to overclocking, but it's been doing this the whole time I've been playing with it, even before the overclocking.

Oh, by the way, my Axim is a PXA255 300mhz running PPC2003, jumping up and down from 199mhz to 475mhz as Hack Master sees fit.

I tried searching for an answer here, but I didn't find anything. Any insights would be appreciated.

Not that this is a definite answer, but I have noticed that some programs tend to stop, completely, when other start. Does it happen only to some of your programs or have you noticed this happening to all of them?

This might be a clue into what's happening.
