I emailed Dell about exchanging my Axim for a Rev A05, since my up button on the D pad doesn't work on my A04. They emailed me back stating that I can only exchange my Axim for an identical A04 since the A05 has a different part number. This is absurd, it's not like I'm asking for a higher model with better specs...I simply want one that functions.

Are you talking about your ROM version? I have A00 :( My D-pad's right-direction feels so mushy -- the feeling you get after u use your mouse button for like years (it was like this the first day I got it... but I just ignored it after reading the threads on this board)

I too have Rev A00, but so far all is well (after installing the D-pad fix for the center press to work).

Osiris, is your Dell still fall under the 30 days of purchase? if so, just tell Dell you are not satisfied with the Axim and return it for a refund, then order another new one. If you approach them with this, then they might grace you and send you an A05 model. Sometimes you have to do little threats like this to get it through their skulls.

Good luck.

fyi
The hardware revsion number he is referring to is under the main battery.
From comments on the Dell site no one knows what changes were made for A05 and those that had it reported that the d-pad felt the same.
Maybe they found a way to make it cheaper and A04 is the better model??? <_<

I have heard reports that some D-pads on other people's Axim's do not click. Mine does click, has anybody had the non clicking problem or was this just a few Axim's made?

Well my D-pad functions, but when you right-click it, it doesn't give that good 'click' tactile feedback -- as in it feels as it's been button-mashed excessively.

LOL!!

Dell emailed me saying that they will not exchange my Axim for a functional one because "upgrades" cannot be done through mere exchanges, saying that I will have to return my old Axim first, for a refund.

I sent a very firm and nice email stating that I wasn't trying to "upgrade" but merely get an Axim with a functional Dpad...

I'm not impressed with their customer service.

I wonder if calling them would have more success? Then you can ask to speak to their superior. Something tells me giving them enough hell on the phone will be much more successful than sending an email, that's they way it always works in CS. Emails get ignored, but the second that customer calls, everyone is dropping everything to help out.

Just a thought - if you try it, let me know how it works... I hadn't even thought about upgrading to a newer unit!

Well that worked,

I advised Dell that I wanted an A05 replacement immediately, because I was getting tired of my dead D-pad in the up direction. They promptly sent an apology email and sent out a replacement Axim immediately. It should be here in a few days. I also specified that I want an A05 only. They said that wouldn't be a problem.

So, we'll see how it goes.

Where did you hear that A05 replaced A04? I have an A04 and my D-Pad works great in all directions. My co-worker has an A05 and her D-Pad has trouble moving up.

My d-pad seems to be tilted slightly upward and is a little loose. Does anyone else have this problem?

Mine is exactly like that, doesn't give me any problems though. D-Pad fix is installed and working fine ...

I am so glad to hear that someone else has that "problem". Maybe its more common than I thought. The functionality of it is fine with me. Although I absolutely love the Axim, here are my gripes about it:

1. The recording button is not well designed. I don't use the button much anyway, so no big deal.
2. The jog-dial has a funny feel to it when you press it in. You have too press to hard. I don't use that function very often, so again, no big deal.
3. I'd love the screen to be a little bigger.
4. The stylus can be hard to dig out, especially if your fingernails are too small.
5. The speaker doesn't sound as good as the iPaq 3100 and 3600 series I had before. That ticks me off a little. I haven't used the headset yet.
6. Size is NOT one of the things I am disappointed about. The size is perfect for me. I don't want a smaller PDA than this.

Please don't take this to mean I don't like my Ax. I don't have the time to list all the things I LOVE about it. It was a great choice for me.
