I am a big time pc overclocker. Running my 1800+ CPU at 2600+ speeds. Is it possible to overclock this processor since more than likely it is just a scaled down xscale 400 mhz processor???

If there was a way to overclock the processor like your AMD how would you deal with the extra heat? I don't think I'm going to fit a water cooling system into this thing :(

If u upped the voltage yes but i think this is just a underclocked 400 mhz processor and in that case it wouldn't have any cooling issues. Plus there is almost no chance you could cook a processor on a battery powered device

Oh yes, there is, believe me. My friend's Jornada practically smoked and burned in his hands.

Overclocking is more a matter of getting jumpers set. Voltages don't have anything to do with it. I overclocked my Casio e-125, and it ran just fine. That said, I've never heard of overclocking the Xscale processors. Given the smart technology they use to adjust speed in the first place, I suspect that the difference between 300 and 400 mHz chips is that the 300's don't pass a speed test while the 400's do. Same mask, same processor, just tolerances in manufacturing.

If that is the case then the probability of successfully upping the speed limit on a 300 is virtually zero. It already failed that test or it would BE a 400!

Agreed. All (CPU) chip manufacturing is based on this approach.

Right but most of the time intel just names the processors different when they can run the same. I think it would eb worthwhile trying this

Overclocking the XSCALE would be a waste of effort cosidering the system isnt setup to use most of it's power anyhow... the data bottleneck is the bus.

Geeze, overclocking an AXIM 300? LOL. You should have just paid the extra 100 bucks for the 400 and not have to worry about overclocking. But then again, you would want to overclock your 400's if you had it. I think it's just the overclockers inner drive to push things to the limit. Kind of like me with my car I guess.

Since we're on topic....what else do you guys overclock? Cell phones, microwaves? :D You know i'm just kidding. I dont think the heat issue is worth the risk of overclocking the AXIM even if it could be done. 300 to 400 is a 25% increase, that seems like a lot to me.

I was wondering how the clock war is going to play out on these PDAs ... what kind of improvements we'll see in the years ahead.
Then again, what's the point w/ this tiny little screen.

LOL, I overclocked my old Clie...

I had that things speed nearly doubled... It was like 60mhz! very fast for a 120.00 palm based device. :D It never crashed either....

Overclocking an xscale should be damn easy, sicne all the clock setup and voltage setup is done via its cool lil i2c bus :)
(just dont drop the voltage too low, otherwise it tends to switch off :)
BUT... Xscales usualy dont have heatsinks or fans .. and i am relativly sure that dell are using 300MHz chips in the 300mhz model (there are various reasons) however, you could be right about it just being underclocked.

BTW: about the clock war.. it isn't going to hapen..
The higher the clock, the more power it draws, i think that performance will be done using better co processors and more pipelines, rather then just more Hz
Of course the 400mhz xscale is only really running at about 3.6Mhz (iirc) :)
