Axim speaker?! (esp. compared to Casio E-125 and E-200)

A while back I had a Casio E-125, screen cracked, got a Casio E-200. The 125 had a good, relatively powerful speaker; the E-200's is quite weaker.

My Axim X5 is being shipped to me and I wonder how the speaker is?!

I especially expect information from former Casio E-125/E-200 owners for comparison.

Thanks in advance.

the axim is my first ppc, so i cant help with the comparison, but i use the speaker all the time...

i think the speaker's pretty good, in fact when i bought it i didn;t expect it to make any noise except for system alerts.

i think the average opinion of the speaker is that it's pretty average, and i have to admit it's very trebl-y. but it is justa 40-watt speaker after all....

Yea, my axim 40 watt speaker makes the windows shake some, but it doesn't exactly blow in the neighbor's doors.

Mmmh,

for music the speaker of the Axim isn't very good. It distorts when you turn the volume above 75%. I was actually wondering whether it's easy to replace it?? ANybody alrerady tried that??

Regards,
Peter

My concern is if I will hear the alarms when the Axim is in a case tucked inside my front pants pocket. This is where I always put my PDAs (well, I couldn't keep my Newtons anywhere else than my suitcoat pocket but that's another story;) ).

I use a special WAV file I made myself with 3 times a soft sound (soft enough to wake up by) followed by 10 times a very loud alert sound; so when it's in my pants pocket I should hear alarms.

While I could hear them in this setup with my E-125, I sometimes miss alarms with my E-200, especially while walking down a busy and therefore noisy city street.

And I'm somewhat concerned if I would be able to hear them with my Axim (that's still on it's way to me).

I don't like it when people are dishonest, the Axim speakers suck arse frankly. The stereo output for headphones are great, with a good set of headphones they sound amazing but these built-in speakers are quite bad. First of all they are too quiet, and at higher volumes they sound quality drops and distorts. I am thinking of modding my Axim so that i can replace it's tiny speakers with slightly larger better sounding speakers.

Speaker is not very good. With the output into headphones so good, they should be able to improve the speaker sound.

If you want a relative comparison then I would tell you that the Axim is sub-par relative to these PDA speakers. It's not absolutely terrible, it's just sub-par.

This answer makes me a little concerned.

Click here and try these WAV files (alarms.zip; 1.1 MB) that I found on the net. The one I use is alarm5.wav which I made up as a combination of alarm3.wav (the soft one: 3 times with 2 sec pause) & alarm2.wav (the loud one: 10 times with 2 sec pause). Alarm4.wav is the same only alarm2 is repeated just 5 times.

And tell me how they sound on your Axim.

Mine still hasn't arrived today should be tomorrow or Friday.

I think the speaker is a matter of expectation. I never had a PPC before and I didn't think the speaker was too bad. Then I heard some other PPC's speaker and I realized the Axim is probably the worst out of the bunch. Is it a bad speaker? No, just not in league with other PPC's I've seen.

I wouldn't cancel my order over it - but I wouldn't expect a great sounding machine either.

It will play all alarms sounds fine even if they are loud because they are simple sounds which don't usually distort on the Axim speakers. I'm talking about listening to in-game sounds or music which is much more likely to distort on the speakers. I still use the speakers often despite their inferiority, they are still usuable. The speakers alone shouldn't put you off on this amazing PDA.

Got the AX finally on Friday late afternoon.

I'm happy to say that it sounds quite a lot louder than the Casio E-200, and that was my concern if I would be able to hear it while in a case, in my pocket and in a noisy environment.

Looks like it will be alright.

At first I thought the Axim speakers were a bit below quality because I had been playing with Viewsonic V37 which has an exceptional speaker quality, which can fill up the entire room, turned on full blast, but really that would annoy my workmates :)
The Axim speakers played close by are quite adequate, and I agree I don't turn it about 75%. When recording voice or some other sounds the speaker quality is quite poor, as you can hear some distortions, as soon as you plug it into a better speaker the distortions for the same recording disappear.
For playing MP3's the speaker doesn't have as much distortion as voice playback. :) It's good enough. I've been playing Mp3's for a few days already, just around the office, when I'm working. The best part is if you have a portable cd player attachment for the car, you can use the Axim as a portable MP3 player. The sound that comes out is quite stunning. For games and such, the sound is just fine, I've been playing age of empires demo, and everquest demo and they're fine.
Definitely it's a good addition to my car stereo, I play all sorts of MP3's with it, and you can customise the buttons for Media Player, so you don't have to fiddle with clicking on the touch screen whilst driving.
