am replacing my x5 with the x5v, what is the best way to clear off all my data without doing a hard reset?

I assume you mean an X51v.

Why not do a hard reset?

Files in BIS can be deleted but theb est way is to format it and also to format any SD or CF cards that you are planning to keep.
