I've got an X5. I want to be able to get the most out of this. However, I'm having two problems.
1.) The back-up battery. I've wiped it off, replaced it, bent the pins upward and still nothing. Is there a registry value I can edit so this stupid, annoying message would quit coming up?!
2.) WiFi. I need a cheap but decent WiFi card. The only thing I need about it is that it goes into the CF port and that it can connect to a G network. Can somebody point me to a site with one of those?
3.) Keyboard. About how much does a fold-out, QWERTY keyboard cost?
What ROM version do you have? IIRC there was a problem with the earlier Axims correctly reading the voltage of the backup battery. I've upgraded my Axim X5 from ROM version A00 to A05 so I'll soon know if that fixes the problem with mine.
Since this is thread is started, I am wondering if there is such a thing as a thumb keyboard for the axim x5. I really don't need/want a full size keyboard, but a thumb keyboard would be nice. I want the type that is only the size of the PDA, something I can just clip on
Hi,
The x5 backup battery debacle! I have the problem intermittently. Make sure you buy the best battery that can be had. The cheap ones don't work.
The Dell keyboard is still available on ebay for cheap. The keyboard isn't the most reliable. I had one break while under warranty and the second one has a bad space key. There might be other options.
Good luck with a wifi card! Make sure you have driver support for the version of wm you're using. That's key. Look at some hardware reviews before making the purchase. Sometimes liquidators or ebay are good places for these sorts of things, if you know what you want.
Yes there is. There was one that retailed with the x5; I don't know the brand off hand. But why not use the soft thumb keyboard. I have spb full screen keyboard, and it's beautiful. No need to carry anything with you!
I purchased some Energizer backup batteries, and when one died, I bought another and both worked. Thanks philosophy, I'm definitely going to try the spb full screen keyboard, sounds like a great idea!
Just to clarify, the X5 takes a CR2032 battery correct?
Yes, that is the correct backup battery.
If you continue to have problems, you can apply a registry tweak to disable the "Low Battery" notification.
First get yourself a good registry editor such as PHM's free regEdit. Use it to navigate to HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications.
Then look for a key named {A877D663-239C-47a7-9304-0D347F580408}. If it doesn't exist then create it.
Under that key create a new String Value named Default with its data set to "Low Battery Warning".
Exit out of the registry editor and go to Start|Settings|Personal tab|Sounds & Notifications|Notifications tab. Under the "Select an event" pull-down select the new "Low Battery Warning" event that you just created. You can then disable both sounds and the message for this event.
A word of caution (besides the usual stuff about screwing things up by messing around with the registry) this will also disable the warnings for your main battery.
Sweet hack! Make sure you put the default string within that key not as a substring though. I found the string there and had to just give it a value. Nice! The number of problems with the x51v and other models makes me reluctant to fall into the world of wm 5 until more stuff is sorted out. PDA's seem to have hit a wall in development. Maybe the Ultra Mobiles will start coming out with better battery life and we can have a 1lb xp machine! I'm addicted to this x5. It runs so well finally. I'm running wm2003 on it. Things have been great since switching to spb Diary, which I highly recommend. It's very solid. Using v 2.02 build 2774. I also highly recommend AlarmToday, which is about the only thing I've found that really licks the alarm problem on this device. I've tried everything. The latest version is highly stable. Also, Wisbar Advance will give you a battery icon in the toolbar if you're worried about disabling notices. I'm using v2.5.0.1, which has been running flawless. This program has been buggy in the past. So, if you find a version that's stable, leave it alone. When it works, it's a total must have program. I digress!!
