I have the new netgear wireless routher number MR814

I have the internet hooked up to my desktop computer thu your this wireless router, and thats great, btu I already had the internet hooked up thu a cable modem, the reason I bought it was so that I could hook up my Pocket PC 2002 PDA to the internet via the wireless router and my Linksys Wireless Compact Flash card.

I have the internet when I go to work in my office but this wireless router at home is not working at all. I have the ssid's adn stuff set right, the only thing I'm not sure abotu is the WEP, and there is NO INDICATION ANYTWHERE about how to get this number, how to change it, etc. It says the defaulr is disabled so thats how I have it set up.

I also have a strong signal on my PDA but when I try to get online with the pocket pc it says "Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP addres. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings."

Then in Pocke t Internet Explorer it says:

"DNS host is not found"

I knew that this was probably going ot be more trouble then it was worth but I decided to ry it out anyway.

I have already tried unpluggin the router adn cable modem, restarting the pocket pc, adn still nothing.

what good is a wireless router if you have to be conneced via a cable to it for it to work??

Please help me out with this problem, my internet service provider is comcast cable.

First remove your wireless card and do a soft reset. Then check your connection settings, insure that proxy server is checked. I hope this gets you on the net.

Do you have the DHCP server turned on in the router? If you are getting the "unable to obtain a server-assigned IP" message, that is the most likely culprit.

Hey fellas I looked at my router and cant figure out where the DHCP options are, is it a software thing? I didnt use any software to install the router.

On the connectins, proxy server is not checked, if I check it it asks me for the server naem adn port adn stuff, I don't know what to put in there.

I don't have my Axim yet, nor do I an MR814, but most SOHO routers have an option to configure a DHCP server. Looking at the stats on Netgear's site, the MR814 does have a DHCP server, which is most likely enabled by default, probably with a 192.168.0.x address space. I looked for a .pdf installation guide, but all I found was a spec sheet.

http://www.netgear.com/products/details/MR814.asp

Just for s*($ and grins, you could try entering a static IP address. Try the following:

IP address: 192.168.0.20
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Take this with a grain of salt, as I have neither piece of equipment to play with. If you have PocketIE configured to use the wireless card, and it still doesn't work, try contacting Netgear and ask how to configure the router. From what you've said, I doubt it's the Axim or CF card.

Hey fellas, this guy gave, me awesome help so im gonna pass it onto you!

you gotta follow it to the T tho

From Johnny Blaze:

I am on Comcast and I have the same router. Problem is probably with your pocket pc setup.

As far as setting the different options on your router, go to http://192.168.0.1 on your PC and that will access the router configuration.

On your pocket PC try pocket hosts and put in the IP address and name of your PC. IP address router sets by default for your pc will be 192.168.0.2

Configuration of wireless card

On your pocket pc go to Settings>Connections>Network adapters

Choose the adapter you are using and click properties.

Try using a static IP address in the 192.168.0.3-192.168.0.50 range..these are the defaults for your router from the factory.
Subnet mask should appear once you assign the Linksys card an IP adress..if not use 255.255.255.0
Default gateway will be your Router 192.168.0.1

To get your name servers, right click on My network places on your computer. Click on properties then select icon for your home PC's connection to the internet. DOuble click it then go to the support tab and click details to get the DNS and alt DNS. Put these into your pocket pc and leave wins blank.

Now on to setting up your connection. On Pocket PC go to Start>Settings>Connections

Click on connections
Set all 3 dropdowns to Work Settings or work

Under the second dropdown click Modify
then click VPN

Select name of your connection. or new if none are listed
Double CLick the name

Under Host name enter the IP adress of your home PC ( if using router defaults it is 192.168.0.2 )

Now click on advanced then on use specific IP adress. Set it to the ip adress of your host PC..192.168.0.2 if using router defaults.

Use the same name servers you got from the setup of your Cf adapter above. once again leave WIns blank. Click ok then ok again and go to Proxy tab

Put a check in the first box and leave the second one blank.

Now go to active sync on your PC and make sure you have network connections enabled . Then on your pocket pc open up activesync. Click on tools then options. Check Include PC when syncing remotely.... the host name you entered earlier should be in the dropdown at this point. select it.

Click on server tab now. DO NOT checkmark anything just put your server name (192.168.0.2) where it asks for server name.

Now go to schedule tab. To make things easier for you uncheck any option that is checked

Click ok then sync and browse to your hearts content.

== im even writing this whilst im onlinel. Thx JB!
