Communication Protocol and/or serial communication?

Does anyone know the communication protocol at the connector on the bottom of the X5? I saw a couple of serial cables on a site. Are they truly "serial" (RS232) communication? I'm looking for a way to log serial data from an engine ECM to my PDA. I've got an extra communication/charge cable I can hack up if that will allow me to take direct communication. I've also got a USB to serial adapter I've been using to log the same data to a laptop. Could I get some kind of female-female USB adapter to make that work with the communication/charge cable? If there are other options or better ideas, I'm all ears!

I may have found my answer already on the commercial serial cables. I continued searching after I posted and found the cables will communicate with RS232 and the X5 uses a TTL level signal (+/-5V).

If I can use a F/F adapter, comm/charge cable and my USB/Serial converter cable that would be the cheap option. Will I fry anything if I try it?
