Hi everyone...it's been a long and beautiful time with my X5. But, I am currently thinking about tossing out my 2nd story window and then running it over with my car.
All of a sudden for no reason, I hadn't updated or downloaded anything...but X5 stopped sync'ing. This has happened in the past and a relatively simple uninstall/reinstall of activesync 3.7 did the trick (yes, 3.7) and I've had no problems. Well, I've spent the last 3 days and 6 hours this morning trying everything that I can find to fix this sync problem and NOTHING has worked...NOTHING. Please, please help me...you're my only hope. My X5 is my everything...without it, I can't seem to function or even think straight. Does anyone here have any sage advice or has anyone else experienced this?
I think most of the ActiveSync problems like this are caused by automatic updates of Windows on the PC. If you haven't checked it out already, look at Chris De Herrera's ActiveSync Troubleshooting Guide. It's the best ActiveSync troubleshooting guide on the web that I've seen.

Thanks VERy much for this!! I have tried a few of the suggestions on here and still no luck...but, I'll keep searching through this guide. Much obliged!
Did you tryto transfer file? even without sync? I had the same problem and it went away after few days. I believe it might be caused by some dirt getting into cradle.
Also if nothing works, try back up entire X5 then hard reset, and try to sync, if this work I'm pretty sure it's Active sync. Why don't you try 4.2 first?
IMO, AS 3.8 is much better than any of the 4.x versions. I would not recommend installing 4.2 if you are using an X5.

I just did a few tests to figure out what the heck is wrong, any it seems that Active sync sees the device. But for unknown reason it does not want to sync with it.. hmm
OK, my problem has been solved. Thanks to my 'automatic backup' I was free from 'hard reset' nightmare. So I hardresetted the device, and see if what messed up the sync. Also I was pretty sure what my problem was. My X5 was on the cradle, doing some back-ups, and I took it off for five minutes for system clean up. While doing system cleaning I found out there was 152 duplicate 'notification ques' but the program I used to find this was 'Pocket Mechanic'
So I proceed to delete 'duplicates' reported by that program. Weird thing is that I deleted once, and then scan it again there is another 20 or 30 needed to be deleted.
Since I never used 'Pocket Mechanic' before, I decided to use SKtools, which I trust, and SKtools just deleted all the duplicates in one que. I did the scan again, and there was no 20 or 30 reappearing like Pocket Mechanic.
Then I felt I need to transfer some text files from my computer to X5, and it woudn't sync.
So I knew that some of the 'notification que' that I deleted must be the problem.. => Hard reset and everything went OK => resotred backup, and everything is working. So the problem is pinpointed : )
Long to short -> I deleted 'notification que' and sync didn't work, so I did hard reset and everything worked fine, and I just restored my recent backup and everything is goooood
Point -> I'm not going to trust Pocket Mechanic anymore, at least for deleting duplicate notificatoin ques.
I did hard reset...I am able to sync after hard reset, but of course don't have any of my programs now. Did a system restore and can't sync again. So, I guess I'm going to have to reinstall one by one to figure out which one is causing the problem. Still don't know how this could have happened. I haven't added ANY new programs to my axim in months.

Opps I gotta go somewhere
I'll edit this when I get back.

'Start if RS232 connection has been detected
connmgr.exe
AppRunAtRs232Detect'
and other one is
'connmgr.exe' description says
'Start if time changes
connmgr.exe
AppRunAfterTimeChange'
'repllog.exe' Description
'Start if RS232 connection has been detected
repllog.exe
AppRunAtRs232Detect'
I believe these three are the one related with active sync, check if you have them.
I'll experiment with them to see if deleteing those render same effect.
Hi again. I have been absent from Axinsite for about a year until I started having the same sync problems as mentioned in the post. So I came here and saw this post. I have the Axim 5 with A05 WM2003. Ver 4.20.1081 (build 13100 Intel PXA255.My email and Worldmate would not sync. I was also getting 'not connected' errors after it tried to sync.
Now this is weird. I took it out of the dock. I have Total Commander and I did a search for 'notification que' . It did not find it. As soon as it finished I put the Axim 5 back in the dock and everything did sync and it downloaded the worldmate city forcasts. It had not done that for weeks. I did nothing else. Very Strange. However, it has synced every time in the last 2 days.

There are two secrets to my success:
You case is probably just active sync acting weird : )
'notiication que' is not neither file nor folder you can search, it is a registry that tells your Axim what to do when 'something' happens (external power hooking up, putting Axim in cradle, etc)
Also it is used when you set up an alarm : ) But you need some 'patch' or 'fix' to make it wake up on time for 2003 OS
I had problems sync'ing a few weeks ago, would get the message that the device was incompatible with the version of ActiveSync I've been using for three years. Curiously, it sync'ed through the wifi connection, but not through the cradle. Then I read somewhere about insufficient memory causing problems and since I'd been doing a lot of browsing lately, went to IE and deleted all the history files. After that it sync'ed flawlessly. And then a few days later dropped the unit and cracked the digitizer screen. Oh well.....
