Would someone please give me the procedure for preparing for, and recovering from, a hard reset?
Due to another problem (I'll repeat it below) I think I must try a hard reset to fix it. I need to be able to get everything back (includung 2003 upgrade).
Thanks.
Original problem previously posted, but got no replies:
My X5 advanced has locked me out of the settings. I can tap Start - Settings and get the settings menus. I can tap on the tabs to go to the different settings menus. When I tap on any of the settings themselves (such as Power or Brightness) nothing happens. Also, it seems to have changed at least one setting by itself. The Brightness goes to dark (and won't go bright when tapped) when I put it in the cradle and goes to bright when on battery power. If you have a fix, please send detailed instructions. For instance, if fix is Hard reset, tell me how to get everything back afterwards.
I have tried pushing the soft rest button and nothing seems to happen.
Unless you have a backup made at the time when there was no problem, it will be pretty hard.
Also 'get everything back' even includes the problem you have right now.
If your ROM has not been damaged, then the problem is caused by the software installed.
I would like to suggest you try uninstalling programs while it is in synced with computer and go on to 'Tools' menu on Active sync, then try to un-check the programs in the opposite order you installed. Of course do not forget to create a backup so after you figure out what went wrong, you can easily restore all the problem except the problem causing one.
Recovery from a hard reset is easy if you backup regularly and keep several in storage on a card and not in main memory. It is also a very good idea to copy your backups to a PC if you are a belt and suspenders type. You need a recent backup taken when everything was hunkydory to restore after your hard reset. You'll still have to redo some settings, but the restore will get you about 98% of the way home. Note: When performing a backup, it is also a good idea to backup, run through a comphrehensive optimination session using a program like SKTools, and then backup again, so that you always have an optimized backup available.
If you still have the registration codes for your self-installed software, a hard reset shouldn't be that painful. Before you hard reset, sync your Outlook info to your PC (make sure EVERYTHING is synced, not just the past 2 weeks, etc.). Check your My Documents folder in Main Memory to see if there is anything worth copying to memory card as backup.
After the hard reset, sync to get back your Outlook info, then reinstall your programs. You may also need to install drivers (e.g., wifi card, keyboard, etc.) if you are using the accessories. That's it! (You might want to do a backup at this point, when your device is problem-free.)

Haven't installed anything in a long time (more than a month). I have a ViVo hard leather case. It has pockets for SD cards in the front cover. I have noticed that buttons can be pushed when it is in a pocket. Could something have been inadvertently pushed that changed settings and access to them? Is there any way, through the PC maybe, to get access to the settings OTHER than through the standard Start - Settings path?

I am trying to avoid rest.
Thanks.

Yes, it's definitely possible that something could have inadvertently touched the screen and changed the settings. To access the settings remotely, you can try something like Pocket Controller.

I really don't have the resources for something like that. Is there no way in through ActiveSync or a shareware, or better, freeware program?
