ive seen the microdrive for $180 (same as a viking cf card) but i figured it would hog more power with the moving parts and all... but I've also hear the data rate is faster on the microdrive.

NO, there are microdrives in the CF format. As pointed out above, however, there isn't much to recommend them over a CF flash memory card. The flash is faster, uses less power, and is less prone to disk errors (no moving parts) and the prices are nearly the same these days.

I love my 1GB microdrive, I use it in my Canon 10D, but I so wouldn't recommend it in a small PDA device. Plus Microdrive have a tendence to crash, and there goes all your software. Go with a 512 CF card, or like me, I found a 256mb CF card at Wal-Fart!
I don't see how a MicroDrive could be faster than solid-state memory? The MicroDrives work exactly like a hard drive, having to move to the correct place on disk before read/write will occur. While with solid state memory, every memory location is accessible at the same instance (just like RAM). With moving parts, battery consumption, and in MY opinion slower speed.....I just don't see how a MicroDrive would be worth it?
