I have an X5 and ppc2003 and could not get a partitioned SD card to be recognized as 2 separate partitions on my Axim.
So, I also am using my 2 Gig card as a 1 gig card.

I have a X5 400mhz - WM2003 A05 Rom. Note: My Desktop PC will only assign a drive letter to the first partition it finds on a memory card, this is a problem with Windows XP. But as you can see Windows Mobile 2003 has no problems with multiple partitions. The above test was done on 1gb SD Card.

Hmmmmmm.
I am motivated to try this some more.
I plan on partitioning my 2 Gig card.
In my previous attempt perhaps the second partition size was just a little too big (or SOMETHING). Maybe I'll try three partitions and see what that looks like.
It would really be nice to have an EXTRA gig on my Axim.

I'll let you know later in the week after I back up all the stull on the card and repartition it.

It looks like you are looking at this with the built in file explorer, I used Resco, but I wouldn't think that the problem.
I will be sure to look with both, and I had installed Total Commander, so I'll try that too.

Resco Explorer 5.41

SKTools

We all know X5's don't support 2GB or larger SD Cards. So maybe partitioning might help but we won't know for sure until we try. Another thing I am worried about is that eventhough SD Card2 will show up, it might still be not accessable do to the original problem with the X5's.

I have an older verison os Resco, but I do have SKTools, so I can look at this reformatted card multiple ways.

I am in agreement about the possibility that this may still not work.
I also think I may have made the second partition too big.
I don't remember the exact numbers, but I made the first partition a little less than half the formatted size and the other sector was the remaining space, so it was a little more than half the space. POSSIBLY the second partition was then too big.
So my strategy will be to partition into three partitions - each smaller than something like 900 MB (or maybe even 800MB).
800 MB
100 MB < just to verify that I can see the second partition and have both less than 1 Gig
just make this something small too, like 800 MB.

If this works, then I can tinker with the sizes a little more and see what else I can get.

[I won't have a chance to try this until Wed or Thurs,
tomorrow is my son's birthday outting to Chuckie Cheese's 4 years old tomorrow]

Did this work?

Did you have any luck getting a 2 GB SD card working on the X5?
I bought one today without knowing about the limitations and wondered if I just waisted some money.

Thanks

So far my tries are not successful, but thanks to Flagmax I am going to try some more stuff, but I won't really have a chance to try until later in the week (you can see the description of what we discussed in this threads earlier posts).

Gave Up

My Axim X5 did not like my new 2 GB PNY SD Card. But, for some reason, it fully accepts my Patriot 2 GB CF card. I would have thought it would either allow 2 GB or not. Maybe some brands work better than others. My Patriot card was in my digital rebel xt-- so I bought a 2 GB Ultra II CF card for it and am leaving the Patriot in my Axim. I've returned the SD card. It just wasn't worth the hassle.

On another note... is there some kind of cover that goes over the CF card slot on the X5 for when you have a CF card installed? I don't like it being open for dust etc. to get in.
Thanks,

khaan13

So far we have not see any problems with CompactFlash memory on X5's. But thats different hardware/slot.

When you buy Axim's new you get a CF card and SD card inserts that cover up the slots when they are not in use. I have not see anything that you could use with your CF card is already install.

I though myself it might be that my X5 has ppc2002 os on it and this is an operating system thing, my toshiba with 2003 works fine, but I do like the swappable battery, better screen etc that the dell provides. So it seems it is a hardware issue...

It is the X5 HW.
I started backing up my 2 Gig SD card so later this evening I can try reformatting it to see if it can be made to use more then 1 Gig worth. If I can I'll post results and details this evening.

More info

All--
It may not simply be an OS issue. I have upgraded my Axim X5 to Windows 2003 + AO5 ROM well before trying a SD card beyond 512 MB. Still, even w/ the upgrade, my X5 rejected the 2 GB SD Card.

I have read numerous posts on various boards. Some claim w/ the newer OS and latest ROM there should be no problem, but plenty of people have done this and have not been able to get 2 GB cards to work. I have seen two hypothesis' that seem reasonable. One was that some brands of cards work and others don't. If that is the case, stay away from PNY as it didn't work on my machine-- but I do have several of their products so they are not a bad brand, just not good in this instance. A second theory is that the older X5's have more problems with this than newer X5's. I don't know what production dates were or what changes were made if any-- but I do know mine was bought fairly early (December) of the 1st year Axims were made. So, the hypothesis would explain why I had problems. Don't know if this helps....

Has anyone tried CF cards larger than 2 GB? Any size limits with that slot?

OK.
I was able to get my 2 Gig SD card into three sectors but kept having problems with my Axim recognizing the third sector = it would only display SD Card and SD Card2, no apps (SKTools, Resco File Explorer, built in file explorer, Total Commander) would not show a third.

So, I tried SD Card at 920MB and SD Card2 had able 960MB.

I was getting a bunch of errors while copying from my CF to SD Card2, either sector not found or Cannot move "<file>" The drive cannot find the sector.
So, I used SKTools and reformatted SD Card2 and I am copying more files there to see how it works.

I'll do a little more tinkering and write down the error messages (if I get anymore) and add to this later.

After I get the errors while trying to copy, it will eventually (in a short period of time) stop reading SD card and SD Card2, and they will appear empty.
The only thing that seems to remedy this is a soft reset.
And SD Card2 gives the error messages as detailed above.

I don't have much hope for this right now, but I'm going to keep tinkering with it.

I was afraid of that. I am starting to believe that now there is no way around this X5 SD Card slot crippled hardware issue. We are forced to use 1gb SD Cards.

Thank you all for your effort.
Special thanks to uzziah0.
