My two week old Axim has seemingly bought the farm. Over the weekend, I dropped the unit in the snow for several hours (yeah, I know, don't even say it...). Anyway, it was very frozen and after thawing for several hours appears to have several cracks in the TFT display (screen). The unit appears to power up fine but nothing shows up on the screen and no features appear to be working (stylus, touch, d-pad, etc.). I have soft rebooted with the typical chime heard during startup but thats it. I spoke to Dell Customer/Technical Support and they said that it was not repairable. In fact, Dell said they do not repair any Axims as they are considered inexpensive and repairs would typically be too expensive to justify.

Any suggestions short of buying a new one? The thought of dropping another $350 is killing me.

Any help anyone can come up with would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ouch. Don't use in the snow. Check out homeowner's insurance - renter's insurance. Good luck. Dell is correct re repairs... this is an inexpensive unit and repairs would probably exceed the cost of a new one. Devices are quickly becoming consummables. Good luck.

Ciao,

Ron

There have been some other brands for which you could get new touch screens and screens and replace them yourself. I doubt the channels for Dell have them in stock yet, but if you could find out the model, you might be able to get one cheaper than replacing the whole unit. I also saw on here pictures of the inside of the unit, and this thread a Dell discusses the innards: Dell thread.

If you take the serial number on the screen and check with a parts supplier, maybe PocketPCTechs, they might be able to repair/replace the screen for you. It's a longshot, but unfortunately at this point you have very little to lose.

Garth,

My condolences. I feel terrible about your loss. :(

I am glad you shared your bad experience with us though, perhaps it will remind us to be extremely carefull with our Ax's.

Perhaps you could find some parts on Ebay. Probably not, but it was a thought I had. I wish you luck in finding a solution.
