I received an email from Microsoft announcing Service Pack 3 for Pocket PC 2002.

http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/d...etpc2002sp3.asp

Has anyone found this on Dell's site yet?

Sam,

From what I understand to be true, SP3 is already installed (WMP is at version 8.5) and has been on most PPC units since mid last year.

My iPaq 3835 came without SP3, and it only had WMP 8.0, but the Axim comes complete with everything that this update talks about, including the "Bliss" theme.

Unless I'm completely mistaken... Anyone?

Nick

That is also my understanding. In addition, I also understand that you want to install only the updates that are released specifically by Dell since there may be some stuff that's particular to one device or another.

I don't know if this applies to PDAs, but I would be careful with Microsoft device driver updates. I would definitely wait for a Dell version of a driver to be released.
My colleagues had gone to the Windows Update site to download and install the critical updates for a couple of Dell PowerEdge servers. Well, they left the default choices checked on, and that allowed Windows Update to update the SCSI driver on one Win2K server and a gigabit NIC driver on another Win2K server. After the server rebooted, there were problems. On the server with the updated SCSI driver, the server wouldn't boot past the BIOS screen, it said it couldn't find any drives. On the server with the updated gigabit driver, the gigabit NIC stopped working. Both we called Dell Premier Support, and Dell told them do NOT use any Microsoft drivers on their SCSI or NIC cards (obviously the first warning didn't get through our thick heads).
We were able to download the Dell NIC driver from another computer, replace the bad driver on the server, and after rebooting, that resolved that problem. On the server with the Microsoft SCSI driver, we had to reinstall the OS and Backup Exec to restore everything.

Yea and don't try and apply the patch if you do find it. I've heard reports about it "reverting" the Pocket PC back to older software.

All Axim's have SP3 and WMP 8.5. No need to upgrade any of it.

You don't need this patch, as already noted.

Definately do not put any PPC patches on unless they are provided by Dell.

Microsoft releases generic patches. Each manufacturer has to appy them to their device & release. This is because the manufacturers provide some of the drivers and interfaces.

Some manufacturers do this faster than others. In the past, impatient users have tried to apply a competitor's patch to their units. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Don't risk it. Wait for the Dell release.
